center of london

Signs indcating distances to London are always to the location of the Queen Eleanor Cross in Charing Cross. I'm would assume it would the current location of the cross rather than the original location.

tim the tog
all distances are measured from charing cross station

Trfalgar Square (Nelson's Column) is traditionally considered the centre of London for calculating distance to London.

Not quite Charing Cross, but not really all that far. Did you know that the side of Charing Cross station that comes out for Trafalgar Square used to be a separate station, but was incorporated into one massive station when they had to build a tunnel for the escalators, which runs from the old Trafalgar Square station ticket office, into what was then Charing Cross station.

Bet you didn't know that.

Hibee
King Charles' statue, Charing Cross.

In the past a variety of locations have been used so if it is an historic sign it could mean St Paul's, Marble Arch, Aldgate, the London stone, or a variety of others depending on which direction it is from London and the era.

Current measurements are taken from the original location of the Eleanor cross in Trafalgar Square (not the current one in front of the station).

sn0ttyang3l
it is the distance to the edge of London from whatever way you are coming from

100 miles away from where u first was?

Think all distances to london are measured to the centre of Trafalgar square

john b
All these distances are from Charing Cross, but perversely, Charing Cross is taken to be King Charles statue at the foot of Trafalgar Square, a difference of about 100 yards.

The walls of the old square mile city of London

to the west the wall ran along the river Fleet, which is where Fleet Street meets the city, between Holborn arch and Blackfriars bridge. to the North it was the Barbican, Moorgate, and to the East, Liverpool st Station, and the Tower of London.

South London is the City of Southwark, and West London is the City of Westminster.

Hi!

To the absolute outskirts.

It means when you get to the city/town limits. Right on the edge of town.

Global Geezer
I think all London distances are measured to and from Charing Cross station.

Ian :-)
Road Signs are measured to cathedrals, in the case of london St Pauls

shoe s
to the border of its territory

rchlbsxy2
There is a "center of town" nominated for each place to take this measurement from.
