When an American FAKES a British accent, can the British tell it's fake?

Or are the accents throughout the UK so different from North to South, that you will be perceived as "Someone from a part of the UK other than the part you're in, and be taken for a Scot or something."

Then there's another fun game to try.

Who can convince the French you are from France the best? A British person who studies French, the American, or the Canadian, or the Australian, or the Irish, or the New Zealander, or .....The South African speaker.

the Americans I've met who try to fake a British accent usually sound absolutely hilarious

Betty
A lot of the time when American people speak in an English accent they tend to speak the queens English (as in extremely posh) and it's normally quite obvious to spot the mistakes for example Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins and the guy who plays the lead role in the film Green Street.

I ask you on the other hand if you can tell that Hugh Laurie (House) is an English person impersonating an American?

Hope this helps :D

Niki
Yeah , an American's fake English accent is normally , Queens English,
Austin Powers/Cockney , or accidentally more Australian.
And we normally know the difference between different accents around the uk.

And to the last bit, probably the british person who studied french, but i doubt they would be fooled.

There are totally different accents throughout Britian.
Think about Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England.
Its like America, not all Americans have the same accents.

Most people who fake British accents use the traditional, queen version but hardly anyone speaks like that, so yeah its obvious that their faking.

No-one says spiffing anymore

Look at what a fool Madonna makes of herself. thank God the Brits have her now she is so embarrassing.

Most of the time they sound like the Queen or some posh person, especially when Americans try it out on TV. It's rare that an america does really sound like they have a British accent. I mean if we tried doing an American accent, we would sound different- over-emphasised.

We can imitate you guys but its harder for americans to imitate Uk accents I think.

Maid in England
I've never met an American that has tried to fake a British accent but I've met a few British losers that have adopted a fake American accent after spending a fortnights holiday in the states.

One word missing from all the answers is "try", when they try to sound as if they as speaking the queens english, it comes out as a strangled mid atlantic cacophony ( or even worse, a 1930s assumption of what a brit sounds like), i assume the same with those trying to speak with an american accent.

Not if they slip up and use an americanism - sidewalk instead of pavement, gas instead of petrol, and that sort of thing.

Judging by 'The Simpsons' attempts at British accents, and I assume the actors have had some kind of training and are therefore regarded as pretty good at it, most Brits would spot an American attempt at a British accent after about 10 seconds. More interesting is how convicing Americans find Hugh Laurie in 'House'.

locksmithite
i'm american and i don't see HOW an american can imitate their accent.

you can hardly understand them as it is, unless they happen to be rex harrison or roger moore.
