Where's the best place in London to get a really good view of the city?

I can't afford the London Eye! I want to go somewhere that's free or cheap, and high up.

This is an easy one... Either primrose hill in regents park or parliament hill near hampstead..Both have great views of the city..

I don't believe it!
See if you can get upto the top floor of Canary Wharf, that'll easily be the best view.

if not there then the south facing hills of North London are good, Alexandra Palace gives you a great view.

BobMcDuck
To the North it has to be Primrose Hill or try the top end of Hampstead Heath, just near Kenwood House. You can see right accross the south and east from up there.

To the South I love the view down Gipsy Hill from Crystal Palace. I walk down this road every morning and it is perfectly aligned to face the city so you see all the big buildings from a great perspective. Wait for a clear morning though.

Free and Cheap -- Climb Nelson's Column but don't get caught. It is free and cheap, and I m sure no one will notice but dont break your neck on the way down. I was initially going to suiggest a boat ride up and down the Thames, gives you a perspective of the city and its landmarks which you don't necessarily get from heights. But if you can't afford it..... If you have any friends ask for a birthday treat up the Eye, that's how I did it!

Monument. I don't think it's free but it'll be a lot cheaper then the London Eye. Lots of steps to climb though....

The previously suggested Primrose Hill is another good one. It's the view of London you see in practically every British film made in the last decade! It's quite moving looking down over the city from afar.

Iain the ORN!
Outside Alexandra palace is a good view.

The London Eye... by the Thames river, not far fromthe Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. You won't miss it.... you can't miss it !!! and everybody kows where it is. If yo have ahead for heights... the Londond is for you !! £10 is the fee (about 17 or 18 US dollars per person)

Try the milenium dome - its the only place you cant see that monstrosity.

The Park Lane Hilton isn't bad for views or any tower block!!

alia_solaris
Primrose Hill! Its the highest point in London and the view is gorgeous. Its in the north part of Regents Park and you can walk there from Camden Town tube or others in that area. I would suggest going early in the morning or late at night to avoid loads of people. Its one of my favourite places in London! :)

walk across tower bridge, it a better and different view than the wheel and its only a few punds. Plus you also get a tour guide for part of the adventure!

London Eye, Oxo Tower, The hill in Greenwich park, the Monument near Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge itself. (You get to walk across the blue and white walkways). If you go up the monument you also get a certificate to say you have climbed it.

Have fun.

Parliament Hill or Kenwood Observation Point on Hampsead Heath, or Primrose Hill.

You can even see as far as Crystal Palace and Battersea on a clear day.

PS Don't any of you Guys LISTEN - he said he can't afford the London Eye.

London web cam runs 24h

If you have plenty of stamina, no fear of heights and no inclination to claustrophobia... climb the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. The Golden Gallery will give you fantastic views of the city from one of its most famous landmarks. It can get a bit cramped going up and down, though. Webby: stpauls.co.uk

If you're planning on staying in London, find one of the weekend deals at the St Gregory Hotel in Shoreditch (webby below) - great views with breakfast.

Stratford U Avon
One doesn't do cheap so one really is unable to answer this question unfortunately!

iloveliz
How about St Pauls Cathederal. Pretty good view for about £8. Not cheap but cheaper than the Eye. Have a good visit there.

It depends on the weather. Canary Wharf has great views over London. There are some good views on clear sunny days from Alexandra Palace and Harrow on the Hill too. If you want to actually see things close up with some detail then you really have to go on the London Eye. It is worth it if you go on a bright sunny day.

daley
london eye is the best, but if you can't go there go to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.

Robin
There is a nice restaurant / cafe at the top of the National Gallery on trafalgar square that's got a brilliant view of Nelson's Column, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament etc etc

all for the price of a cup of coffee!
