Depending where in the north you are coming from, drive to either Stevenage (A1M), Luton Parkway (M1) or Watford Junction (M25/M1), and train it in. All these stations have regular and fast trains to Central London. Driving in London, if you are not used to it is hard work, though less so on Sundays.
The three stations above all have large car parks, and cost between £3-£6 a day.
Check the cost of advance train tickets from your starting point though, if you book in advance, there are some bargains to be had, and someone else takes the strain. Sid. |

Come down on the train if you park in town that will cost you . And then you have the congestion charge, stick to the train. |

We drove to a train station not that far from London, left the car there and got the train in.
Much less hassle, stress and you don't have to worry about the mad driving that goes on in the capital.
We actually travelled from somewhere near Stevenage but there are lots of places.
Why don't you just get the train for the whole journey? It only takes a few hours from where I live oop north and you can have a proper relaxing day then without worrying whether your car is OK, paying for car parking charges and making sure you're back before the car park closes etc. |

I would say leave your car at home & catch the train into London ! I would advise against parking on the street in London ! As unless you know & understand 100% FULLY the appropriate On-Street Parking Regulations for the EXACT LOCATION (London Borough, Street etc.) for where you are parked up, then you are bound to pick up a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN = Parking Ticket !) from a (friendly ?) Civil Enforcement Officer (CEO) = (Ex) Parking Attendant ! PCNs are not CHEAP in the London Boroughs & the Penalty Charge varies from Borough to Borough ! PCNs are a REVENUE EARNING exercise for the Issuing Authority i.e. 'Mug the Motorist' in my opinion ! PLEASE do NOT get CAUGHT OUT ! |

At home!
Take the train....
Sooooooo expensive to park anywhere these days....
You don't say if you will be staying overnight or not!
If an overnight stay outside central London, then leave your car in hotel carpark and take the train/underground to "central". |

Most car parks in London are safe and secure, however costs about £35.00 a day to park!! Train it, much cheaper!! |

Probably the easiest route for you if you're coming down on the M1 is to take the Junction 7 turn onto the M10,which is a short stretch of motorway into St.Albans. It's an easy drive from the motorway end into St.Albans City Station.Only three turns involved. On the way you'll pass the Abbey Station at the bottom of Hollywell Hill. Ignore that one. It's a local line into Watford. St.Albans City staion is what you want. It's well signposted, and takes around 10 minutes from the motorway on a good day. Good parking at the station, and safe. St.Albans is worth visiting in itself. It was the capital of Britain under the Romans,(they called Verulamium). There's a large ampitheatre and Roman baths, and a massive Cathedral with the longest knave in Britain (687 feet),with a decent park and lake close by,beside which is the oldest pub in Britain (The Fighting Cocks),and the home of the Real Ale Campaign. The only English pope came from St. Albans, as did the first Christian Matyr in Britain (a Roman soldier called Alban) and so does Steven Hawking (author of A Brief History of Time). Trains to London St.Pancras run about every 20 minutes through the day, more frequently during rush hours, but they're packed solid then. Journey time varies from 22 minutes for the fast trains to 30 minutes for the snails. Last train back is around half past midnight normally, though I have got one back at 0115. Check the current times at the station when you get your ticket. Cheap day returns are available after 9am,for around £12 but can't be used in the rush hour coming back (5-6.30pm or thereabouts) I'm always late home anyway,so it doesn't matter for me. Depending how far north you are,it could a hell of a wearying trip for one day, especially thinking about the drive back. A B&B in St.Albans might be better and you could maybe leave the car there. There's a few places close to the station. |

Park near Stonebridge Park Tube Station. The yellow lines on the road (underneath the railway bridge ) are completely worn out so parking is free. If you are coming from up north (M1) , at the end of the M1 take the north circular A406 (west) , After about three miles you will see the turning for Park Royal, take this exit then turn right at the first set of lights, then you will see Ace Cafe. Ace Cafe is a very famous bikers cafe, you can't miss it. Just after Ace you will see the railway bridge previously mentioned with the station no more than 50yds away. It takes about 30mins on the tube into Central London from there. |

Stanmore tube station (near junction 4 on the M1).
Then get the tube in to the centre of London, takes about 40 minutes.
As it is the end of the line you are guaranteed to get a seat when you start your journey! |

depends how long for, i like to drive into regents park and park up on a meter then just walk over Marylebone road and you are into regent street and the west end. This way you dont pay the congestion charge. |
