Bowness/Windermere's my favourite - definitely best for touristy type stuff and plenty of places to eat - definitely try a restaurant called Postilion (very nice and well priced).
Ambleside and Kendal are also good tourist spots.
If you want to go walking, there's loads of walks wherever you go, but for most you'll need walking boots, etc. You should also go to a waterfall called Aira Force near Lake Ullswater. That's a really nice short walk where you won't need any walking gear.
Wherever you stay, you'll be able to travel by car to most places and very easily as it's almost all country roads. |

Ahh love the lakes. We`ve been a couple of times now, and are planning to go back in a couple of weeks, we stay at Centre Parcs but go out every day, it`s such a beautiful place and lovely scenery.
We love going to Windermere (Bowness) but it always seems to rain when we get there, even if it`s sunny before!!! There`s lovely chocolate shops and a nice little African shop which we love visiting. Then there`s Ambleside, which has the Glass Onion from the Kitchen Nightmare programme and some lovely shops. Kendal is also nice again with some nice little shops!!! Can you tell we like browsing shops?! Our favourite restaurant/pub is a place called the Waterside Inn, think it`s just after Ambleside, it`s so nice and peaceful, has a nice log fire and they do lovely brick chips!!!
Hope this helps, email me if I can be any more help. Have a lovely time and enjoy it x |

It is so very beautiful, it would be hard to suggest one place over another, but at this time of the year, Wordsworth's` cottage at Ambleside is a must. It is where William Wordsworth lived for many years and where he wrote the poem "Daffodils".(...I wandered lonely as a cloud...) I went many years ago and the place was surrounded by daffodils, I hope it still is. The cottage is period furnished and contains many of Wordsworth's` personal possessions. You can then go on to Windermere and take a boat ride along the lake. They also have a lakeside `museum/aquarium` where they show all the fish and plant life that they know is in the lake, you can view the fish from tunnels `under `the fish and there are lots of displays for children and adults alike. |

The lakes - but take a good guide book! If you are going now take warm clothing. Dont go swimming, its cold in the water and Hypothermia is not a good hotel to stay in! |
