Where are the best places to go in the UK for a visiting American?

I am planning a vacation to the UK next year, and I need some advice from the locals as to where to go! Things I enjoy include... gardening, dogs, especially Corgis, drinking and dining, farming and of course single men!

Being from the seaside in California, I would love to do some sailing over there. Where's the best water at?

I have family in Wales and Scotland and plan of visiting there, and of course, I have to go to London.

What time of year is best to visit if you want warm weather and small crowds?

Does anyone have any suggestions????

Thanks in advance!

May and September are best for Scotland

Oban on the west coast of Scotland is good for sailing

.

The Bankman.
In no particular order, The Globe Theatre, Stratford on Avon, London Zoo, Longleat, Stonehenge, Glastonbury Abbey, Open top bus tour of Bath, Fistral Beach Newquay, Cardiff waterfront, and Old Trafford Manchester.

Enjoy.

If you visit Cornwall then the Eden project is great as you like Gardening I think you would like that. We have lots of farms(and single farmers!!!), great pubs (in Saltash) just over the water in Plymouth(5 mins from Saltash!) there is great sailing. Only down side is thats it a long way from Scotland (im Scottish). Anytime of year is good in Cornwall. If you want to know more feel free to email me - I could go on forever about it.

London is good for attractions, wales (water sports) and Scotland for stunning scenery.
for single men anywhere.
worst time july-august when the kids are on holiday and London becomes very busy.

Youv'e got to go to Bath, Salisbury (for Stonehenge and Cathedral), Canterbury and Oxford as well as London in the South of England. I would be inclined to go to Northern England too - Manchester, Newcastle, Durham, Liverpool - for a different perspective.

try Cardiff City & The Bay! - if you like shopping & eating out
- True, its not got a bloomigdales, macys , Jc Penny, Ross (dress for Less) Target (oh i love those shops - just got back from Orlando!)
but Cardiff has got to be one of the best city centres in the UK
the castles aren't bad either!

The Lake District (in England - near the Scottish border) is the nicest scenery. Keswick would be a good place to stay.

I'd be tempted to head for Kent. Canterbury is a must as it is beutiful and has so much history. On the Kent coast, as someone has already mentioned, is Whitstable which is good for sailing. avoid places like Margate/Ramsgate - even the locals find them hard going! A day out at Leeds Castle near Maidstone is a must!

If you are over in England I would recommend booking 2 or 3 days in a local hotel and hiring a car so you can get around.

I agree Bournemouth is great.

For boating and amazing beaches - Cornwall and Devon,

I guess Bournemouth would be more into boating as there are a lot more people there. But very busy in the summer which is when the nicest weather is....

Bath is a gorgeous city. Don't miss it.
Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Manchester + London are very good for shopping.........

Uhhh...Farming and countryside - again Devon And Cornwall.... you must visit both them places..

Don't go to Brighton or Blackpool or anything =/

In terms of sailing, anywhere around the solent, such as Lymington, Southampton, or over on the Isle of White - Cowes, you will find a lot of sailing.

The southwest of England - Plymouth, Falmouth are also great sailing spots.

I always think end of August through end of September is a good time.

Thats a hard one really as there are so many places London of course being the Capital, Canterbury which is 1hr 30mins by train (from victoria station) and is a beautiful city, full of history, cafes, bars and not far (20mins by bus) is a quant seaside town called Whitstable (possible sailing for you there), it also has the oldest company in the world still tradind, well over 1,000yrs old with its own restaraunt on the the sea front "The whitstable oyster company.
Cornwall is a big tourist place in the summer "Newquay" has great beaches and lots of surfing and surfer dudes.
You will find a good rail network that covers the whole country or cheaper National coaches but they will take a bit longer, anyway i`m sure you`ll get lots of suggestions so i won`t ramble on, have a great time when you come over...

Phew, so much to do in this country, so many things to do etc. How long are you staying for and where? I would suggest you visit anytime from Late April to Early September for the best weather and opening of most of the attractions. Also if you want to go sailing then most of the major gales and storms are passed by then, however, the Atlantic surges that come this way are always throwing spanners in the work, best waters for sailing are the Dorset / Hampshire areas (area chosen for the Olympic Sailing events) and covers the area from the Isle of Portland all the way to the Sussex Cove (Brighton / Beachy Head area), or The Western isles of Scotland for beautiful scenary but less dependable weather or if you really are adventurous the Sciliy Isles area and into St Georges Channel and the Severn Estuary.
I would suggest you have 3 days minimum to visit London central area, if this is your first time, just to see the sights (If your going in any take more time) 1 day for major cities outside of London. If your going around any gardens here and seeing the country, then choose wisely some of the bigger tourist sites charge a lot of money, some of the smaller gardens however have the same look and style but are a little cheaper.
You will also find that travelling just 50 or 60 miles you will see great changes in the flora and fauna of this counry let alone the styles of building, farming and animal husbandry in the country and population.
For smaller crowds try to visit in term time which varies from county to county, but if you think 2 weeks at Easter time, then a week at Whitsun, then 6 weeks on average from mid July to September, obviously the times in June, July and August are the most popular with tourists coming into this country.
Once you have chosen the date and where to visit and are still not sure ask again, I am sure you will get a more detailed idea of things to do.
