We live about an hour from the centre of London in Surrey (Byfleet - which is between Weybridge and Woking). It is a little pricey for some but a lot of the local schools are very good and you really do not feel that you are living so near to the Capital because the noise, anti-social behaviour and general crime levels are so low.

No where! London is one of the most expensive places to live so affortable housing isn't really that easy to find.

vampwithaheart
Lets put it this way.... affordable housing is usually in the rough areas of London and although there are some good schools, the kids will probably get robbed or stabbed on the way to school lol

Try on the outskirts of London like Kent.

note for blink.... Bromley, Orpington, Hayes, Sidcup or Chelsfield are in Kent... I've lived there and they're expensive too... try greenhithe, gravesend and dartford.

It depends on what you mean by the centre of London geographical centre, financial centre, or entertainment centre, if you try to get anywhere within the radius of the 2012 Olympics centre you will find house prices are astronomic so decide what you are going to do in london ie study work invest or whatever then search out the areas you would likely to be situated and get information accordingly thats my advice

try hertfordshire area, I live near watford & im close to M1 & M25, I can be in central London by car in 50mins rush hour, 25 mins non rush hour.

Watford has underground station & train station& you can be in london in 25 mins on the fast train.

cost of housing is fair, & its more country side than city.

Still in Stockbridge!

To be honest there arent many places,

I live in South East London on the Borders to Kent, Welling, Bexleyheath, Blackheath area all lovely places and are about 1/2 hour by train to Central London.

Hope this helps slightly.

Try South East London - Bromley, Orpington, Hayes, Sidcup or Chelsfield. These areas aren't glamorous, but a fast train from Bromley or Orpington can get to Central London in 15-20 mins, the schools are good, crime is low and these areas are as cheap as London gets, which isn't saying much.

You don't want to drive into central London with the current congestion charge at £8. Sadly, even if you cross the line to do a U-Turn, they will charge you £8. And they will fine you if you haven't paid it.

There are loads of places from Zone 3 out. I lived in Upminster which is off the National Rail so would take approx. 23 minutes to get from Upminster station to Tower Hill in Central London. Housing was not badly priced adn there are some good schools (my flatmate is a PE teacher in a sports college 5 minutes drive away).

I would suggest looking into Zone 3 or 4 areas, as travel won't cost as much and is easy to get into the centre. I would also suggest not focussing totally on one area as things become difficult if you narrow it down too much. Search for good schools first, then branch out to looking for good houses.

Good luck!

That place doesn't exist.

one hour drive from the centre is about half a mile away in the rush hour!
There really isn't anything much affordable in central London, you could look at Mottingham, chislehurst way (mottingham part cheaper) its still fairly OK there mostly.

Epping, have Rod Stewart as a neighbour.

i wouldn't say you could get all of that in one package but i will recommend the twickenham area because there is access to good schools, there is low crime as far as i know and the houses are pretty reasonable...maybe a bit expensive but it is worth it...and there is good access to london by car (i think) and definitely good access by public transport...
