I don't know if this happens on Thursdays, but my very favourite thing to do in London that was free, was the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. What an amazing display of pomp and ceremony. The horses were wondrous & the helmets of the riders were sometimes topped with feathers, and sometimes with beaver hats (it looked like). It was really something very very special.

Enjoy.

All the best museums are free. The parks are also free. It is a bit late in the year but usually there are free events in the Parks quite often.

there are a few handy websites with things to do for free in London:

Weather and age allowing, there is a wicked playground in Kensington Gardens. There is beach sand, sand diggers swings, a boat and more. I think kids up to twelve can go in. it's free too.
Did a google found this: http://www.royalparks.gov.uk/parks/kensington_gardens/diana_playground.cfm

almost any musem is free i would go to the tate because they have the large slide it is free and you can see some art and then take a very inexpensive boat trip anywhere.

Try Going to camden market , which will make the kids wonder around , but be prepared to be asked "I want that , can I have it?"
Other than that try going past Big Ben
or you could try going nearby big ben to a little port , going for a small trip down the thames river (for a small fee) and the tour guides are very helpful , give them a try!
