I think you can never go wrong with a good holiday park. They're not the nightmares of the 70's or 80's anymore. The luxury ones are lodges with 3 bedrooms, TV,. DVD, Microwave, fridge freezer etc. There is usually some form of entertainment for the kids and adults and an indoor heated pool. Most are set in woodland with walks, trails and near the beach. Some that we have been to and enjoyed were:

Sandford holiday park in Dorset (near Poole)
Waterside park in Dorset (near Weymouth)
Devon Cliffs park in Devon

see www.parkdeanholidays.co.uk
and
www.hoseasons.co.uk to book.

Center Parcs in my opinion is overpriced for what it is which is basically a holiday park for people who think they're too middle class for holiday parks.

Butlins is also good if you go during a family break (not the adult weekenders), the one at Bognor Regis is great with kids clubs, bars, free fairground, restaurants and on the beach. There are loads of places to visit nearby for picturesque walks etc.

How about the city of york, we have vikings and romans, and walls to walk, we have shopping for muim and trains for dad, Thomas the tank at railway museum feb half term, we have lots of fun museums and dont forget the big wheel. Easy free parking at park and ride with adults paying just £2 per return and kids go free. All you need is somewhere to stay and there are lots of child friendly B+B's all over, plus lots of hotels cheap and expensive. Cafes and rstaurants galore and if you need a babysitter so you can have a night on the town check out local nanny agencies as my wife used to do regular baby sits for hotel guests in York for agencies as a registered NNEB.
