york is a beautiful city there is plenty to do and plenty to see , there is lots of museums (the minster, castle museum ,jorvik viking centre the dungeons) river tours ghost walks plent of excellent restaraunts and pubs and the shopping is excellent and the night life is not too bad either.
Accommodation in york that would be reasonable would be the travel lodge or the quality hotel which are on piccadilly which is the litterally the centre of the city |

How about:
Arnside just north of Lancaster, Small village, couple of pubs, walks along the river estuary, woodland walks etc views over Morcombe Bay + North to the Lake District. Not far from J35 on the M6.
Malham in the Yorkshire Dales, not far from Skipton, small place. Limestone area some impressive features nearby, Malham Cove, Gordale scar etc.
Plenty of places in Lake District, try the quieter Western Lake district, Broughton in Furness is nice.
On the East Coast, Whitby or one of the villages just North or South of this area. Few Villages within the North York Moors.
Try this website, lets you look at photo's / maps of possible locations:

Are you wanting a city break or a country break? Chester is a lovely little city if you don't already know it...there are lots of differently priced hotels...look on the Chester tourist board site for advice....there are nice shops and retaurants, a lot of history and a lovely river. |

Depends where you want to be and what type of break you would like......I know some lovely little country pubs, for a meal and stay the night, in the North East. Durham is nice! |

Maybe North Yorkshire, I stayed near Maltham once. Nice countryside. |

perhaps liverpool? there's also manchester, york, newcastle?
if you do stay in liverpool, places are getting booked up quite quick. i'd recommend you stay near the albert docks as some of the hotels there have brilliant views and its not far to walk to the city. |

MANCHESTER!! It is a wonderful city, it has everything you need but it is not too big and still has a nice atmosphere and people are friendly.
Not Manchester? Now you say so! Then Harrogate maybe? |
|

Colin-why?

Put your web cam on to Harrogate |

Sorry I have to disagree Manchester is horrible!
I've been to the The Lake District and nothing can compare! It's so beautiful, it truly is amazing there. It would be my personal first choice, there is also so much to do there. I live in the North east of England and the The Lake District is the best place to go in the whole North, in my opinion anyway.
Take care & good luck |

Try Skipton in North Yorkshire, lovely place not too far to travel from Preston but set in the Dales. Beautiful. |

The Lake District would be my first choice.
Edit - Have you ever been to Prestbury or Wilmslow (Cheshire) Buxton (Derbyshire) |

I suppose it all depends what kind of break you want. Bustling or rural. I am in the north but couldn't begin to answer the question. Let's face it, 'the North' is a big area. Are you a Blackpool type person or a Yorksire Dales type? |

Lake District would be my first choice - wish that we lived closer so that we could go for the odd night - book now as this very popular
2ND choice - York - beautiful town, loads to do, from visiting museums, to people watching or shopping,
ideal place for all sorts of reason - there is something there for most people to amuse themselves |
