If you want MORE THAN just sand and sun try Cape Town. It's a night flight so you aren't really aware of the journey. Time difference is only 1 hour so no jet lag.
So much to see and do and the rand is weak so everything is cheap!
Table top mountain is a must of course, if you can face the cable car ride!
V&A Waterfront is shopping paradise for the women!
While at the V&A go on the simulated combat mission in the ex Vietnam Huey helicopter. Don't tell her too much before you go on as she will refuse. You will love it! Operates with the doors open so when he banks violently you are looking down almost horizontal to the land with only the seat belt stopping you falling out. Scares you to death doing 100+ mph 2ft off the ground down in a 10ft deep dry river gulley! Then he does a crash stop balancing on the skids on top of a ridge. You can hear/feel the rotors having to really work hard. They've not heard of Health and Safety namby pamby down there!
Get a hire car and go to Cape of Good Hope.
Boulder Beach near Simonstown to see (and smell!) the penguins.
Stellanboch and the wine region......
You have to be a bit careful where you go, and going out in the city at night. But use common sense, no worse than London.
We went to Hermanus and saw the whales going by just off-shore all afternoon! However by Christmas I think they have gone.
There are lots of resort type hotels but they are out of town and you waste time getting about. We stayed at Protea Hotel Pier Place which is in the city centre. It's surprisingly cheap but the great point is it has it's own small kitchen so you can shop at a supermarket and do simple catering OR go to a restaurant. We were usually so beat we just wanted a simple quick meal in the evening. The hotel has a good breakfast, and there is a snackbar/simple restaurant along from the hotel if you want cheap quick simple meal instead of self catering. It's nice to have all the options. A big plus was also that your car is parked inside a gated "quadrangle" type place so no potential for vandalism type problems to your hire car. |
