You get a GREAT view if you climb to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral. There's over 500 steps, but it's worth it! |

Parliament Hill, on Hampstead Heath, is famous for its views over London. There's even a big steel plaque engraved with the panorama you can see and the names of key buildings.
You also have the pleasure of watching locals flying kites from the hilltop -- it's an amazingly peaceful place on any sunny day. Here's a picture from a German visitor's blog, which shows the view from the hill.
It's a few minutes' walk from Hampstead Heath railway station, on the North London line, or about 15 mins from Belsize Park tube. Here's a multimap for directions: just walk to the end of the marked road called Parliament Hill: there you meet the footpath leading up on to the hill itself... http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|parliament%20hill,%20NW3#t=l&map=51.5569,-0.15973|17|4&loc=GB:51.55758:-0.16236:17|parliament%20hill,%20NW3|Parliament%20Hill,%20London,%20England,%20NW3%202
Two more great viewpoints are actually in the old City of London: the viewing gallery at the top of the Monument (alas, closed for refurbishment until the end of the year, but have a look here for more info: http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/leisure_heritage/architectural_heritage/Buildingswithinthecity/monument.htm , and -- my personal favourite -- the top of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral... just have a look at the virtual tour here (activate the tour, then click on "view from the top"): http://www.sphericalimages.com/stpauls/virtual_tour.htm From both you can enjoy wonderful 360 degree views across the heart of London. |

The view from the top of Primrose Hill (northern end of Regents Park, opposite the Zoo), is fantastic. You also get an excellent view of London from the higher parts of Richmond Park. |
