It mainly depends on what you like and which part of the country you'd like to visit. Check enjoyengland.com for ideas. |

How about a day trip to Ayr, you could get a flight from Stanstead to Prestwick - have a day on the beach and fly home again.
With Prices what they are on trains it would probably be cheaper flying up to the Scottish Riviera than going to blackpool if you get a cheap Ryanair flight. |

I've heard Margate and Ramsgate are nice. I've not been though. Bournemouth is nice. Any place by the sea on a sunny day would do me nicely. Mind if I tag along?? LOL. |

Try Broadstairs, which is a lovely seaside town in Kent. Or try Rochester which has a fantastic castle and cathedral, and a real old fashioned high street with many connections to Charles Dickens. They frequently have festivals and thIs weekend will see the Sweeps Festival take place, and the world-famous Dickens Festival takes place on the weekend of 31 May 2008.

Canterbury is very beautiful, has lots of historical buildings, good shopping, cafes and restaurants and - of course - the world famous cathedral!
Alternatively, if you like history, you could make your way south to Battle and Hastings and explore the site of the Norman conquest, as well as quaint houses, excellent pubs and beautiful countryside. |

The mind boggles - there are so many suggestions but I can't list them all here. I live in London too, and have family, so go on day trips quite frequently. For some of these ideas would be better to hire a car as you would spend too much time changing buses/trains. We are historically and nature inclined, so here it goes -
- Just west of Hastings (Kent) is a secluded but breath taking beach at Petts Level. If you look at a map it's close to Fairlight Cove. The interesting thing is that at low tide only (check tide tables on internet) you can see and walk amongst prehistoric tree stumps where a forest once stood, next to smashing cliffs. Explore nooks and crannies, find timber from any of 2 sunken wreks off that coast (we have) and eat at the terrific Smugglers Inn. Very quiet. Be careful with the tides as people can get stranded. In summer you can bathe there.
-Historic Battle and the Abbey (1066 and all that), also in Kent.
-Hever Castle, Kent (Ann Bolleyn's family etc.) (Expensive though)
-Stonehenge and nearby Avebury Circle & Manor, bit touristic but a must see if you've never been there.
-Go to the National Trust website, there are many grand properties within 1 - 2 hrs drive from London; Waddesdon Manor (Rothchilds), Greys Court, The Vyne, Lacock Abbey,Mottisfornt Abbey, Upton, Polesden Lacy (nr. Guildford), Nymans, Igham Mote, Chartwell (W Churchill's home), Scotney Castle, Batemans, bodiam Castle..... Many of these properties have special events on weekends.
-Was suggested before but I recomend it too: Stratford/Avon, museum, gorgeous buildings, Anne Hathaway's house, church where he is buried, stroll along the river...
-Chatsworth House in Darbyshire, simply massive.
-Buxton area, the town itself is very quaint and walks around it fabulous.
-Blue John cave, the only place in the world where it is mined, and other caves in the immediate vecinity, one of which has an underground river (very small one), just north of Buxton, south Yorkshire area I think.
-St. Albans and the Roman remains there & museum.
-Bath - the town and of course the pseudo thermal baths.
-could go on for ever...
Enjoy yourself! |

Bornemouth (South) is pretty also.. if you want to join the sea.
London - Oxford travel spend sth like 1 hour by train, and 1h30 by bus (around £15). |
