Portsmouth is a great place to live, and your budget should be ok, as long as you don't mind sharing a house with other people. Nice climate, not too far from London, great nightlife, lots of work available, university town.

Lincolnshire is much more desirable now they have the direct train link to London. Okay, so it's a steam train and a cup of tea costs tuppence in one of the little wooden carriages - but hey :)

Seriously though, Lincolnshire is cheapish and has trains to London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Sheffield and the house opposite me (2 beds and garage) is being rented at Â£375 if you need a ball park figure.

You talk of the North West - do you mean NW UK or England? NW UK is in Scotland.

Stoke-On-Trent, central to everywhere and the M6 runs from the north to the south right through Stoke, property is cheap, it's surrounded by green areas and it's less than an hours drive to Manchester or Birmingham.
You can rent a 3 bed semi for about Â£400 a month.

Kingston Upon Hull is the eighth biggest city in England (population around 300,000), located on the East Yorkshire coast, it has a very good university which people come from all over to attend.

Great nightlife, shopping, history, architecture, waterfront and it is earmarked for billions in redevelopment funding over the next ten years.

The docks also offer a gateway to Europe and it is very cheap in comparison to many other places.

The Hull City football club (The Tigers) also just got promoted to the Barclays Premier League. If you are a rugby fan, we have two Super League teams (Hull FC & Hull KR).

It is (or was) also home to the lead singer of the Beautiful South, Norman Cook (aka: Fatboy Slim) one of the girls out of Bond, Tom Courtney, William Wilberforce and I am sure a great many other famous people.

We have a number of theatre's and museums (many of the museum's being free of charge) and The Deep (the world's only submarium).

Sitting right on the north bank of the Humber river, there is very easy access to the major motorways to connect you quickly and easily with the rest of the country.

It's never dull in Hull.

How about Newcastle? i still think you'll struggle with 400 for 2 bedrooms though, unless you live a little bit away from the city.

Newcastle is a vibrant city, with plenty of culture and a fantastic night life.. check it out.

Lincolnshire, i would recommend east of lincoln, but if you'd rather be near a big city try the countryside west of lincoln, or lincoln itself has good links to leeds, sheffield etc. It's much nicer than west yorkshire!

Â£400 will not get you anything in most of the uk now
plus the council tax on top of that

plus bills, tv licence, phone bill etc etc

Manchester or York I love both shops are better in Manchester and nightlife is great lots of trendy flats in the town centre.
York is more picturesque and has nice bars and history suppose to be the most haunted place in the UK.

i live in hertfordshire which is close to towns but still can be a little bit country. There are lots of train stations that can take you to london etc or you can drive to london cambridge, etc

Wales i a wicked place. U wouldnt be able to afford a place in cardiff as the going rate 4 a 2 bed flat is like Â£550 or if its a shared house u want u would be able 2 afford it. Try down the valleys in Wales like Myrther.

What I don't understand is how you can say that you are moving to the U.K next month, and yet, you really have no definite plans as to where you are going to live.....and presumably....gave no idea where you are going to work either????

When we decided to move to Cyprus...we nade several visits beforehand, then, we had to find a place to live ( choosing to have our own house built.......there is no council here to hand you a house on arrival)...then we had to prove that we could provide a skill to do a job that would not take a job away from a Cypriot.. My husband is a plumber, and fortunately, struck up a friendship with the developer who was building our house, and as a result got a job with his company. I, on the other hand, am a qualified pharmacist, and have found work in a pharmacy.

Within the next few years here, ther rules will become more strict, and before anyone can just move here, or buy a house here, they will have to rent a property for a given amount of time beforehand.

So, what do you plan to do when you arrive? Have you been to the U.K. before? Even for a holiday? Do you have a particular trade or skill? Think long and hard before you make the move...because if you are just going to turn up with the presumption that everything will be handed to you on a plate....then you are one of the reasons why I left the U.K.

LONDON. i love in london and it's brilliant. fantastic public transport. great support. great nightlife, great music scene, great clubs/bars, everything. you can meet new people everywhere, and if you dont like the rent size, go a bit further out into a borough of london, and it's just as great :)

Manchester is a great city. Try north manchester, accomodation there, can be pretty cheap
