Hertfordshire. It's a nice place with lovely countryside yet still close enough to London, only far cheaper.

OMG to the person that said "Surrey in Berkshire" ... they are two separate counties.

To answer the question ... the thing is, most places that are within easy commuting distance of London really aren't that much cheaper. Yes, you can find places that are a little cheaper, but if you are planning to commute into London, how much would your train fares be? How much extra will you be paying the babysitter to sit with the kids for an extra hour whilst you take the extra time to get home?

I was thinking about moving to Kent from my current home in Souf East London. But, I currently pay £1.80 per day in bus fares to get to work. If I moved to the area in Kent that I was planning to move to, my train fares would be almost £300 per month. Kind of makes up for the difference in rent!

As a general rule, Essex is the cheapest county, followed closely by Kent. The most expensive are Hertfordshire and Berkshire. But, they're all big counties and within each one there are certain towns that are exceptions to this.

Cambridgeshire (45 mins by train ) plus you can get a 4 bed detached fro the price as a london studio flat!! esp peterborough. Cambridge city itself is probably MORE expensive than london! but the countryside is clean and acessable

I understand that london can be really expensive to live however surrounding areas of london provide you with cheaper options.

some of these areas are croydon, crawley, redhill, reigate, luton and many more...

Hope you find what you looking for
