Sounds like a Welsh name to me, so I'd say it's in Wales.

In the Black Mountains, Breconshire, South Wales. There are actually two of them: Llyn y Fan Fach (the smaller lake) and Llyn y Fan Fawr (the larger lake). Llyn, by the way, is the Welsh word for "lake". You might enjoy reading the story on this link, set in Llyn y Fan hundreds of years ago from the Mabinogi, a collection of Welsh folk tales. http://www.hiraeth.com/alan/misc/gott-nov97/myddfai.html.
