well,Joanne beat me to it,York really is a nice place, loads of alley ways to walk down, lots of history, even the pubs are friendly, and the river Oose to stroll along, and thats just the town.your only 40 odd miles from the coast, but you would need a car

My advice is to visit any small historic city eg. Chester, York, Edinburgh, Salisbury, Winchester, Canterbury. Just choose one that's closest to you. These cities are very interesting and have lots of places to visit around their peripheries. Small hotels like Travelodges and Premier Inns are cheaper at the weekends and usually have vacancies.

the west country.

'Er indoors!!
A lot depends on what you expect from your break away. If you like it noisy, brash, and with lots of nightlife, then somewhere like Blackpool, Newquay, (Cornwall ) Weston -Super -Mare, Butlins, would be your ideal destinations. However, if you are like me, and love culture, peace and quiet, and hidden resorts that not too many people know about, then S..E. Cornwall is the place to be. My favourite place in Cornwall is a tiny village called Lansallos, I walk my dog most days on the secluded beach, with it's little waterfall , and walk for miles along the stunning coastal path, to Polperro, looe, and Polruan, and hardly meet a soul. Gorgeous!!!

If you like a bit of both, I would suggest somewhere like Looe, Fowey, and some f the nice resorts in Devon, like Torquay, and Paignton. Happy hunting!!!!

York is good, has loads of litle quaint pubs (haunted apparently) the Ghost Walks are great fun as are some of the museums and dungeons. Then there is the Minster, beautiful.

If you like nic nak shopping you'll love the old Victorian street 'The Shambles' all crooked and Black beams, lovely.

depends what u like to do. if u like a bit of peace and quiet and nice scenery id suggest the cotswolds. or if like me u like the hustle and bustle with lots going on then nothing wrong with good ol' london town or brighton!

depends on what you like.
York,Bath,Edinburgh.London even or maybe a small village ?
it's easier to ask if an body can recommend something if you give ideas for what you are looking for. eg area, Cornwall? Scotland etc. Then what you like to see or do. IE beaches, museums, craft fairs or cobbled streets and markets.
list a few of these and you will find your search easier.

- The Winchester - Salisbury - Bournemouth area

- South Devon

- Lake District

It depends on where you live, really.
Pick something that's not too far from home; because, if it's only a weekend break, you don't want to spend half of it on the road, do you?

Personally, I'd go to Belfast. I'd like to see Northern Ireland, and it's an ok distance to travel for just a few days.
