I'm Mancunian living in Birmingham.
I spent many a year asking Brummies who they'd support if there were a civil war. They seem to not care one way or the other, so my guess is that Birmingham is the centre.
I always thought I was Northern, until I met my Geordie boyfriend and actually discovered quite how Northern Newcastle is.
My best anecdote for you; I once asked a girl, from Reading but living in Birmingham, whether she thought Brum was in the North or the South, and she responded that it was definitely in the North because it's a sh*t hole. Charming, |

Umm...
I always see anyone north of Nottingham as Northern.
Birmingham and Telford are in the centre of the country.
I'm from Reading, Berkshire (40 miles from London) and I'm a southerner.
Geordies sometimes consider EVERYONE from Liverpool, Manchester, etc ALL southerners...Not true. |

Bakewell, Derbyshire!
That is the geological answer, because that is where the 'Northern' rocks like Millstone Grit take over from the southern sedimentaries, but a lot of people agree that the North begins in Derbyshire demographically as well! |

People tend to say they live in the South East, south west,East Anglia, the Midlands, north east and north west.I live in Yorkkshire which is in the north.
You can not say someone from the midlands lives in either the north or south.People from up north tend to look on southern as London and further south, but people from London tend to look at northern as being Yorkshire and Lancashire and further north, alhough some think its anywhere north of Watford |
