Where is the best place in the U.K. for a family from the U.S. to relocate? |
We were thinking of Edinburgh. I heard it was a great place for families. It would be nice to have the city with the countryside nearby. We are looking for a city with a University. I read that Edinburgh had a problem with the English. Will we have problems because we are from the U.S.? |

Edinburgh is a great choice. You won't have problems because your from the U. S. If you have problems it'll be because of somehting else but why should you expect trouble.? Just come and enjoy. |

Edinburgh is a wonderful city, with a great university and it is one of the nicest places in the UK. However, I think you should consider Bath - it is also one of the nicest cities I have visited. It has an excellent university and the climate is better than Scotland. It is in a beautiful part of the country, with great motorway links to the West Country - Devon, Somerset and Cornwall, as well as London and the Midlands. The city has some wonderful architecture and is surrounded by some lovely towns and villages. I do really love Edinburgh but I would strongly recommend you have a look at Bath. Before making such an important decision it is vital that you visit both places. |

No you will be more welcome in some cases!
I think Edinburgh is a lovely city and it has all the things you mentioned plus oodles of character and several really good festivals. A big advantage if you are relocating permenantly when you get British citizenship then in Scotland they have free prescritions for health care and also have free education through university. I would recommend all people thinking of relocating to go to Scotland, their services are better run and more inclusive plus outside of the major cities like Glasgow/Edinburgh/Aberdeen they have bags of room, cheaper land and houses and better crime prevention. I'm thinking of 'emigrating' myself. |

I think Edinburgh is nice. People there are much friendlier then their counterparts in england. There are 4 Uni's Edinburgh, Napier, Heriot Watt and Queen Margaret so the city has its fair share of students international, scottish as well as english. I ve been to lot of cities in UK In my opinion Edinburgh is the best place for families to live. Even at a drive of 1 1/2 hour away I would not recommend Glasgow for families. |

It's not as simple as you think.
First you will need suitable visas for yourself and your family, then you will need a work permit.
Both are tough to come by.
Before you spend a cent check with the nearest UK Embassy as to current requirements.
If you can get the necessary paperwork the Edinburgh is a nice city, but expensive, even by UK standards.

The Midlands is nice although very industrial in places the surrounding countryside is incredible. AVOID Ilkeston (in the midlands) at all costs! It's the absolute pits!
I would also avoid London but then again I'm a Midlander originally from Ilkeston so I would say avoid London! |

Try Exeter in Devon. Plenty of quality universities, good climate and beautiful city and countryside. People come from all over for the education and a foreign american acccent will only be one of many |

Lived in the southwest (very far from Edingburgh) in Exeter. It has a University and a Cathedral...Hasn't really kept up the way some UK cities have, but the surrounding countryside (Devonshire) is beautiful. Dartmoor wild and wonderful, and Devon has coastal beaches. Surfing on the north Devon coast, sailing in Cornwall which is also close. 3 1/2 hours to London... I lived there for 2 years and loved it. Cheers |

You cant beat Shrewsbury in shropshire. It's a large town, the administrative centre of Shropshire (I think) by the river, Lots of historical buildings and excellent links to other towns and cities (manchester, Birmingham, Telford, Leeds and Bradford) to name a few, great shops, great nightlife, close to the beautiful welsh countryside, a real mix of the old and new. I never fail to be stunned by the view from Shrewsbury castle. But as with anything, you should try before you buy and not take peoples word for it. |
