I once lived in a maisonette in Birmingham. Believe me, it was like living on the Bronx.
It was a block of 10 homes, 5 on the top, and 5 on the bottom, and it contained all the low-life you could imagine. We had prostitutes, child molestors, burglars, drug peddlars, alcoholics, you name it, we put up with it.
My Husband was the only person that went out to work, and eventually we managed to get moved.
We now live a million miles away, in gorgeous Cornwall, in a tiny village that couldn't be more different.
We still visit Birmingham as we still have relatives there, and I always make a point of going past that block of maisonettes, just to remind myself just how lucky I am now. It hasn't changed, and the residents are just as bad today, 20 years on, and I feel sorry for any decent families living there.

Something more micro...mine was a flat in Johannesburg (South Africa) when I was a student. Pulled all kind of strings to get in (the queue), but then had a flat over an alley (6am dustbin call!) that was directly across from an entertainment bar. The only way to cope was to join in the fun until the last song was performed! Cool in the beginning, very uncool on the pocket and zeees. Only lasted 6 weeks. |

Montreal Canada. Too cold and the people there are rude. I was born and raised there, but I have to say, I do like the south. |

I lived in Shard End in Birmingham for about 12 months.....I hated it....there was a pub called the Harlequin, and it was surrounded by a mottley row of shops!
Having said that, I have lived in Cprus for several years now, and love my life here, but on a recent trip back to Birmingham, we did take a drive through Shard End, and the pub, along with a couple of other dodgy pubs close by, had all been demolished, and it does look as though the area is having a bit of a facelift!! I would never go back there though! |
