Old Town for history, New town for bar jumping. Try the Hard Rock.

Ian M
For the best bars, clubs and the like check out "Rose Street" it runs north of, and parallel to, Princes Street in the City Centre.

The Rose Street Brewery regularly wins prizes for it's beer.

Easy walk from Waverley Station.

classy bars are on George street, opal lounge is good for celeb spotting. shopping on princes street and make sure you see the castle, even the view is spectacular.

Glad to hear someone is visiting my home town. It's the most beautiful city in the UK. Go on the ghost walk tour - it's really interesting. One of the best pubs is the Jekyll & Hyde in Hanover Street (have fun trying to find the toilets!) or any of the bars in Rose Street. Climb Calton Hill if the weather is nice, it's a great view over the city. Also, try the camera obscura just outside the castle entrance. You can watch people on Princes Street and they don't even know!

There is so much to see and do, I'd definitely suggest reading up on it before you go & planning your trip out. Have a great time.

hi
Once you've done the Castle and the Palace and the Royal Mile, try taking one of the local buses down to Leith. Heaps of bars and restaurants - including one on a boat! Ocean terminal has the Royal Yacht to see and bars etc. If you have time, take a trip out to South Queensferry, (local bus). Very romantic down there. Drink or dine or both and watch the two bridges across the Forth light up. At least four restaurants have windows with a view right over the water. Enjoy your trip!

Sounds like the guys above have pretty much answered with the main places to see.

If you're on a short timescale, I'd recommend taking an open top bus tour. There are a few rival operators and most buses leave from Waverley Bridge (beside the main railway station) and you should be able to hop on & hop off at all the main attractions.

The walking tours of the Old Town are also worth a shout in the evening. Head to St Giles Cathederal in the evening and most of them have stalls with further info there.

You should go everywhere! The royal mile is the main shopping and historic street that ends at the castle. It is great for shopping and restaurants. They also have a great deal of ghost tours available as well. If you are a scotch drinker, there is the scotch museum. you get a bit of a tour and history of the drink, as well as many samples as to the differences in scotch based on where it is made. If you plan on leaving Edinburgh, Sterling Castle is nice, but you will have to put up with a statue of Mel Gibson as Brave heart on the grounds. Loch Ness is also a lot of fun if you want to do the touristy bit. There are some great day trips out there and romantic B&Bs to stay in.

There is so much to do it really depends on what your thing is.

There is obviously the Castle which is a must, the Scott Monument, Jenners department store, Dynamic Earth, Aurthur's Seat, Camera Obscurer, The Royal Mile, Hollyrood Palace, The Scottish Parliament.... my god I could go on and on! It really depends on what you like!

There are great freaky tours, ace for a laugh and pretty creepy, you go into the vaults of the old parts of the city that have been sealed of since the Plague.

If you are into literature there are great tours incorporating the life and works of RL Stevenson, Doyle and even more recent classics such as Ranking and Rowling!

I would also recommend Leith for nice bars but stick to the classy glass fronted places, don't wander into any other pubs LOL! International Starters in Commercial Quay is an amazing resturant!

Edinburgh doesn't fare to well on the club front I'm afraid!

hi Mikey

you are now talking my home city. There's lots to see in Edinburgh. If you are going by train The Waverley station is just off Princes St.There is a tourist information desk ther & you can get a free City centre pocket map. On it, it will show you the streets & attractions & how to get there . One good place to visit is the hidden street. It is called Mary Kings Close & it is a street that is underground & goes back to before the plague. I'll give you a short list of places you can visit but there are many more.
1 the castle & military museum.
2 botanical gardens
3 museum of childhood
4 the edinburgh dungeon
5 camera obscura & world of illusions
6 scotch whisky heritage centre.
there are many more & as i said before if you get a street plan it gives you the adressesof them all.
for drinking Rose street which is just Princes street is full of pubs & clubs.
Hope you enjoy your visit but dont leave without getting some Edinburgh rock & clootie dumpling.
