Manchester is a fabulous place to live - I guess it depends what you want as to where you live.
Do you want city centre or more peaceful out of centre accommodation, flat/ house with garden etc etc. And it depends where you will be working as to the best place to live - its important to make sure that transport etc is good from your home as you dont want to be stuck on the other side of the city
I would recommend looking at some of the property websites to see whats available in your price range - if you work out a list and then go up there for a day trip and call in at estate agents etc. And go and travel around to the housing you've identified so that you can work out if you like the area.
see
Manchester University has quite a good guide to the areas of manchester - http://www.manchester.ac.uk/undergraduate/accommodation/areaguide/ although its based on student housing its got good general info
and Manchester Home Finder http://www.manchesterhomefinder.org/info/9areaguides.shtm
Or alternatively http://www.whathappenedlastnight.net/manchester/property/areas.php is focussed on bars etc
more generally try the Manchester Evening News website http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/
or Manchester guide http://www.manchester.com/
For my money (and based on visiting friends so not very comprehensive view of all manchester) Didsbury has always struck me as a good area to live - reasonably central, good houses and good range of shops, pubs etc |

I'll tell you what I was told when I moved to Manchester 7years ago:
It rains a lot, and when it does it really does
Avoid Moss Side
If you want reasonable rent don't go to close to the city centre
Since I've been here I've lived in:
Whalley Range
Stretford
Sale
Prestwich
Stockport
All of which are ok, but like all places they always have areas that are not very nice. Chorlton is a nice area and very young and studenty. It really depends what type of area you want to live. I found Prestwich quite nice and quiet and Sale was very nice too but a bit pricey for me.
I was paying aound £300 p/month exc when I moved here, that could have jumped a bit but my advice would be to look around to get the feel for what you want. |

Don't live in Manchester it is full of Mancunians!
Really though for a budget place and if you can travel try along the route that the metrolink follows as parking is expensive
http://www.metrolink.co.uk/
I am sure that there are nice places to live along the route as it is commuter country and that will have driven all the drug infested dead heads to leave and go back to Moss Side or Pendleton etc |

Don't listen to them - Manchester is a great city with some excellent architecture and a vibrant nightlife. Some of the nicer areas to rent in are Chorlton (quite villagey feel, lots of nice shops and bars), Didsbury (east and west), Sale and the City Centre has some reasonably priced flats to rent. Avoid Mosside, Ardwick, Gorton, Droylsden, Fallowfield (unless you want to live with all the students), Whalley Range and most of Salford. There are a few up and coming areas that might be cheaper to rent in - try the Chorlton side of Stretford (I used to live here and it is really nice), Ancoats (lots of new developments and regeneration money) or even Burnage and Levenshulme are becoming a bit more gentrified.
You can get a 1 bed city centre flat for about £500 a month or a shared room in a house will set you back £200-250 a month. I have seen a few houses to rent in Stretford around the £300-350 mark.
Good luck! |

im from stockport and ive been living in manchester city for a few years.
in my experience east didsbury is a nice place but the downside of that area is all the students!!!
In every place you live there is always a rubbish area and good ones so choose wisely where you wish to live and a lot of landlords are just penny pinching t***s!!!! |

Offerton and Great Moor are wonderful!
Hazel Grove is OK - a little too busy these days, but great countryside on the doorstep. |

I lived in Manchester in one of the best areas, Didsbury. It cost me as much to insure the house and car as Brixton. Car theft is rife and so is burglary.
On Friday and Saturday nights, all the chavs from the rougher parts of town descend on Didsbury to get p*ssed in all the bars and then vomit and p*ss in the shop doorways, usually causing several hundred pounds worth of damage to your car/house on the way.
The city centre is very dirty, ugly and is run by one of the most incompetent councils in the country. It can take them up to 2 years to process a housing benefit claim.
Levevnshulme and Longsight are semi derelict ribbon developments on the A6. Great if you are a junkie or a hoodie or an asylum seeker, but if are hoping to work and support yourself, stay well clear.
I wouldn't live in Manchester at all.
If you want to live in the north west and be within travelling distance of Manchester for work, I think Warrington is a better place.
It has a very good shopping centre, some beautiful parks and houses and crime rates are lower.
It is very good for jobs too, it is a major distribution centre for the country so work in logistics, call centres, banking, retail are plenty. Wages match Manchester.
Manchester is a rough city, drugs are rife, muggers control the streets, Police have given up.Move there and you will regret it. |
