Where would you perfer to live, Australia or UK ?

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking to move to the UK. Some say I would love it there but some say Australia is better.

Are there anyone who have been living in the both countries? I grew up in Sydney myself, but don't like it at all. Are there any UK cities where I can find friendly and easy going people, like Melbourne?

Any clean, non racist and straight forward answers are mostly welcomed

I haven't been to Australia. It seems quite fun but I've been to the U.K. and I loved it. I really like their accents, sense of humor, excellent public transportartion system.. Plus good shopping. I think that I would like to go to the U.K. - maybe London- because there's a lot to do, I think it would be very exciting. Plus you can travel to other European countries for quite cheap. I would like to visit Australia but I might feel kind of isolated there. You might like Glasgow in Scotland, I hear the people are very friendly.

But I used to love Australia though I hadn't been there-- it seems really cool. You've lived in Australia, so really.. I think you should plan a vacation to the U.K. Moving there without visiting first might be a little rushed!

I live in the UK and my ex-husband lives in Australia! Maybe you should travel around Australia before you uproot and move to a different country. Life is what you make it, not where you live. Lots of people don't like their hometown, it's natural. I've lived in 20 places in 40 years and have learned it's not where you live that matters, it's who you are with.

A nice, easygoing city that is small enough to be friendly, very historic and stacked full of theatres, cinemas, concert venues etc - Norwich in the east of England. But presumably where you are able to settle would depend on where you would most easily get work. That's why so many get sucked into London. Visit London by all means but if you don't like big cities, definitely don't consider living there - it will drive you crazy!

Regina..thanks! Us Glaswegians are renowned for our friendleness:-)

I can only say to you that..in my years of travelling..the grass is always greener, shall we say!

My advice to you..is that if you haven't travelled alot.. and you are not happy where you are. a/ travel more and b/work out exactly why you are not happy where you are

To travel..broadens your horizons..and then perhaps you can find your settling ground. London (eg) is a big and busy place and I've found it's too hectic for me, personally. I love the quietness of Scotland and the the friendly people..whilst also have the hussle and bussle of life, nearby should I wish it.. however you may wish for something different.

Should you want to move due to problems etc.. (not saying that you do)..remember that problems do not go away with you moving away from them.. because You will still be you, with the same thoughts/feelings etc..does that make sense!?!?

Having visited OZ I could say "ooh I'd love to live there"..but apart from Gold Coast weather etc and lovely beaches I don't know enough about the politics of Oz and the goverment etc and housing costs and job specs etc. May I suggest you do your own research into this, should this be a contributory factor for you, prior to making any move.

Finally.. I think.. that perhaps (sori if i'm wrong here) that people in OZ feel so far away from certain parts of the rest of the world.. eg they can't get to Paris so easily as we can! Well..should there be any countries you wish to get to...that's what holiday's are all about!!

Good luck and please send some sunshine over from MEL as we are having a naff summer here in the UK!! Remember you would be leaving your lovely weather behind!!! (so bring it with you, please, if you come here) xx

Hello, me again :P

Yes I think Australia is a much better prospect. Melbourne is lovely! How long ago were you in Oz? It will give a good yardstick to measure by.

If you are basing in regards to your chosen Gender I found Canberra very good - but its so expensive and one of the reasons I moved away from there. I know a fair few TS/TG in Sydney and if your into the 'scene' (taxi club, etc.) then it is good. If however you want to be just accepted as a woman I was very pleasantly suprised with where I am living (Cooma NSW) the whole town has been great and it is so cheap here (houses sell for around $150-200K!

I have had a bit of experience in Melbourne (my parents live in Frankston) and find that as long as you steer clear from the red-neck suburbs it is on the whole pretty good.

Of course it helps to have the support network in place and my parents and my three sisters in Melbourne means that I plan to move back there in a year or so.

I dont like Sydney as I find it too hustle and bustle.

Hope it helps.

Spare me....it's warm enough in the UK but Australia is baking...much too hot.

Hard one.
The UK is great because it is so close to so many other countries, but the cost of living and travel is over the top.
London is great but so very overpriced and the cost of living is a real killer, and the people can be a clicky... a bit like sydney but more ingrained and older.
I prefer Australia because of the nature and the environment. And because the weather is often better!
The UK just feels so diluted and controlled.
Maybe you should just try a different australian city? What is it that you don't like? Because there are always going to be idiots no matter where you go.

I had visited both, Australia and UK. Australia, I was in Melbourne and had a short trip to Sydney. UK I was mainly in London.

Looking at just these 3 cities, I would choose Melbourne to live...nice people, great food, and of course..lower cost of living. However, if you gonna go UK, perhaps other towns, apart from London, would be lovely.

I'd choose both!, October - March in Perth, Australia and then April - September in Manchester, UK.
