Which British main line railway station has the best connections to all the other main line stations?

I'm looking for the main line railway station with the most frequent/fastest connections to the rest of the country (not just london!).

It's got to be Birmingham New Street. From there you can get direct trains to London, South Wales, North Wales, Scotland, East Anglia, Devon & Cornwall, York, Everywhere !!

To travel from Aberdeen to Penzance (the furthest apart places I could thnk of) takes 12 hours. 6 hours to Birmingham and another 6 to Penzance. I'd have to agree with the people saying Birmingham New Street.

Dry Dreamer
Leicester, Crewe, & Birmingham new street are the most used for connections

Will you be leaving your backpack there?

It used be Birmingham New Street and I'm asusming it still is as I can't believe transport routes have changed that significanlty over 10 years.

Got to be one of the central stations - Birmingham New Street is one of the busiest stations in the country outside of Victoria/Kings Cross/Euston, and it's got loads of connections north and south, so I'd say there.

Mental Mickey
I was on a train once and upon pulling into Preston, the guard announced "change here for everywhere". Although a bit of an exaggeration, you definately can change here for trains to Blackpool, Windermere, Barrow in Furness and the Lake District, trains to Edinburgh, Glasgow & Inverness, York, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and London Euston plus many others. You can get at least one direct train a day from Preston to most UK destinations, more if you change trains. Preston definately has a good claim, but then so do Crewe and York for similiar reasons.

It's definitely Birmingham New Street. Just take a look at this map:

http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/travelling_with_us/our_network/default.aspx

Practically all trains from anywhere in the north to anywhere in the south pass through Birmingham New Street. Crewe is only relevant in the Northwest.

dot&carryone.
King's X comes to mind as well as connections to the North it is connected via the tube to all the other mainline stations.
