It really depends on what you are looking for.

I come from Surrey which is very close to London so commuting is easy, but it has beautiful countryside. My son lives in Wiltshire and it is a slower pace, also beautiful and very rural.

At the end of the day, wherever you are, it's what you make of it.

I think York is the best place to live in England, I dont live there myself but I would like to, I go as often as I can.

I lived in Shropshire ten years ago, its beautiful. Fresh air frendly
people ( well most anyway ). very low noise, nice market towns
but it did'nt have much in the way of entertainment, unless you had a car.I live in Manchester now it has everything at the end of a phone, people move too fast ( life ).so i have seen both sides, it is hard to choose between the two but i would rather have the peace and quiet and know i could walk any where i wanted to and breath fresh air see trees and wild life.

North Yorkshire. Didn't I see somewhere that it has overtaken Kent as the Garden of England.

More beauty
More things to see
and close to Leeds if you want the big city things

Hampshire.....close to London airports of Heathrow and Gatwick, and beautiful beaches of IOW and Bournemouth. Ferries from Southampton, Portsmouth and Poole are readily available and little warmer climate than north of UK.

Norfolk. The coastline`s beautiful, and the accents great!

Devon the only county with two seperate coasts North and South but South devon is the best Some lovely sandy beaches and the moors not far away .Lovely climate and rarely cold in the winter. The pace of life is slower although it does get a bit hectic in the summer months.Dawlish is my favourite town with the stream running through the middle and with the black swans about.
