I have been to both countries.

Each nation has its good places and bad places,
good people and bad ones....
each has its own bunch of problems...
so it is difficult to compare.

Comparing what?
How do you define "good" & "better"?
National Income?
History? Heritage?
Hospitality & diversity?
Safety & cleanliness?
Sizes?
Environmental friendly?
Medical advances? Spread of diseases like AIDS?
Numbers of Nobel price winners? Olympic winners?
Technological advances?
Level of easiness to survive 80 years & procreate?
Military strength?
Ease of shopping?
Quality of people?
National average IQ levels of citizens?

Even people who had lived in UK for 20 years and US for 20 years cannot answer this question because it really depends on their locations & income levels.

For very rich people, any nation is good.

I'll have to say the U.S.. i never been to the U.K. so i don't know how good is to live there.

The grass is always greener on the other side: For people who live in UK, US is a better place, for Americans, UK.

What we have, at the time, is the best: The best place is where you live. For Brits, UK, for Yankees, America.

What do I think? Well, I love England. :-)

In terms of variety of scenery and natural resources the US has much more.

But in terms of economy and the like the UK wins hands down. The UK has the worlds fourth largest economy and yet is one of the smallest countries. Multiply the UK landmass X number of times to equal the US landmass and then multiply the UK economy by the same figure and it would be many many times greater than the US economy.

The UK has made more inventions than the US and in fact the US would probably not be in space today but for a number of British inventions such as the Fuel cell.

The US and UK are friends and allies. We have far more in common than most other countries and in many ways our safety and security depends on continued cooperation.

At the end of the day the best place is where you are happiest. Some need great wealth and modern amenities, others need open space and living in nature with very little.

So there is no 'right' answer to this question other to the individual expressing their opinion.

Does make for great debate though and one of the better questions asked here.

hey, i'm in quite a neutral position - neither american, nor british, but have lived in both... pro's and cons....

Technology:
- DEFINITELY US. UK is veeeeeeery slow (the last in Europe, in fact)

Big, fancy houses are cheaper in the US - UK is too cramped for space hence property's more expensive

UK is congested, but that means that people are closer together - public transport in UK is excellent as compared to the US (it's practically non-existent in the US). In the US, you can forget getting from one place to another minus a vehicle of your own! Everything's so far and so spread out - unless you have bucket-loads of cash for cabs, or you live in New York where you may just catch the public. And oh yes, owning a car isnt the easiest job!

Safety-wise, I would say UK is slightly better.

Benefits from the governments are relatively the same - in UK the education is free until university standard, and very cheap for university as well for the nationals. US, it's very expensive on this front.

Cost of living is just as high in both places...

UK, we can still smoke in public at the moment. no, US, better roller coasters. no, UK, prefer the women. No US, bigger portionsof gurb. No, UK, better pints of beer. No US, Hollywood. No, UK, fish and chips. No, US, Tennesse Bourbon and on that point after the weekend of Jack D (god bless his soul), I prefer the US!!!!
