I'm a Mancunian who has spent a lot of time living over in Merseyside. Personally I feel that there is not a lot to choose between the cities. All cities have areas that you should avoid and all have their nice areas too. Both cities have benefited from a lot of investment in recent years (Manchester from the Commonwealth Games, Liverpool from the 2008 City of Culture win). I think Antonia's idea of spending some time in both areas is a good idea - to get a feeling for the areas and where you could afford to live. (There are areas of Manchester in particular that are prohibitively expensive - but the same in also true in Liverpool.) I believe Liverpool has more art galleries/museums than any city in the UK outside London, whereas I think the shopping and restaurants are probably better in Manchester. Either way, don't think you can go too far wrong either way (as long as you do your homework of where to avoid!)
Another consideration could be employment. Are you looking for a particular type of job? Are there more vacancies in Liverpool or Manchester? |

I live in Warrington- in between Manchester and Liverpool...why not try a compromise- we r just a train or taxi ride to both. If you really wanna live in one or the other i would say liverpool though- people much more friendly, and a much more relaxed atmosphere, especially on nights out. |

hiya hun i live in Liverpool and i love it.it is such a friendly place to live the night life is brilliant. The museums and gallery's are amazing and the Albert dock is a lovely place to chill out.Plus with us winning the capital of culture the city is just getting better and better there are lots of career prospects and its a buzzing vibrant city.
Why not stay in both city's for a week or 2 and see which one suits you good luck.
P.s ignore all these people saying we are thief's and scum Manchester(and lots of other cities) has a far higher crime rate than Liverpool xxx |

Liverpool is better in my opinion. Didn't it get voted as most cultural city or something? The place has a good feel to it. Manchester really isn't all its cracked up to be. Lots of people seem to think its great but i've never thought it was anything special- trying too hard to be something it isn't! |

I'm not from Liverpool, but i have lived here for the last 11 years. I absolutely love it, but there are places, just like everywhere that are really bad. My mum lives in Manchester, and it is just the same. And, with Liverpool getting the capital of culture, that must say something!
Good luck with your decision xxx |

If you like Prawn Sarnies - Manchester
If you want to lose the wheels of your bike or car - Liverpool
Personally I can't stand either place |
