Obviously if money is no object then Knowle, Solihull central or Sutton Four Oaks.
Second best would be Moseley, (but the schools are terrible) some parts of Edgbaston, then Hall Green (but not in the council estate) or Kings Heath (again, not in the council estate - you just can't get away from them in Bimringham!) or Kings Norton and Stirchley have some nice areas but are further out.
I live in Acocks Green which is a good compromise, bordering Solihull and Hall Green with 2 train stations nearby, not too far from the city, big houses, decent vibrant shopping centre, very cosmopolitan with a big mix of ethnic backgrounds, not had any problems with crime myself, and you can get into the Primary schools in Solihull and the local secondary school is rated 'outstanding'.
Places to seriously avoid - Handworth (not Handsworth Wood which id different) Kitts Green, Shard End, Erdington, Hodge Hill, Alum Rock, Sparkbrook, Nechells, Lozells, Northfield. |

I used to live in Brum and always found Moseley a very funky place to be - lots of nice bars and shops and good accommodation.
P.S. Hippoterry's answer is spot on - I used to live in Kidderminster too and the south west of Birmingham is a great place to live. |

Have a look at the south west of Birmingham (Edgbaston, Harborne).
Just over the boundary into Dudley you have Halesowen, Kingswinford, Stourbridge. Easy access to city by road and (even better) rail. Also, if you must, you are close to Merry Hill for shopping.
If you can travel further there are some nice areas and villages around Hagley, Kidderminster and Bewdley.
Take a drive out of Brum along A456 as far as Bewdley. People new to the area say how impressed, and surprised, they are by SW of Birmingham. |

The nicer suburbs and surrounding towns include Edgbaston, Sutton Coldfield and Solihull from the top of my head. |
