Many, many years ago I was going to Bettshanger Pit on a visit (in north east Kent).
Nearby were places called "Sandwich" and "Ham", and, as luck would have it there was a road junction at which, from the right direction, you read "Ham Sandwich".
There are a number of places called "Laughton" (Sussex, (Lincolnshire and Leicestershire) and I know of two "Twatt"s (one in Orkney, the other in Shetland).
But what about "Muck", one of the Hebridean islands? |

Guzzle Down... (URL)
(Goonhilly Down is better known)
We have a whole range of bottoms,
Bishop's Bottom, Pratt's Bottom, Six-mile Bottom...
There are lots of butts around.
Bishop Butt Close may be the best street name in that category.
(the butts, historically, were fields where archery was practiced)
Penistone, near Sheffield, is a place than needs to be pronounced carefully.
But I think the most awkward juxtaposition is in Devon.
To be so close to the wonderfully named
Buckland Monachorum,
but to live in
Crapstone... |
