Devon is located a few hours south of London and is easily accessible by train. However, I recommend that travelers make arrangements for transportation before arriving in Devon, as the locale is unabashedly rural. Many I've met in Devon make the long drive from London just to enjoy the scenery. (Yours truly is a train rat, quite frankly.)
I shall refrain from naming the bed and breakfast pictured below, and for exactly the opposite reason than one might suspect. The lodge is booked far into the future and takes no new customers (only repeats)! It is somewhat of a newcomer in the neighborhood, being built in 1714 and restored over the past decade. (My room is always on the second floor, overlooking the trout pond.)

Much of the rest of the village of Upottery, pictured below, was built in the 15th century. The village pub is usually jammed in the evening with wonderful and hospitable townsfolk (and the food is quite good too).

Of course, one can locate Devon bed and breakfasts on the Internet, but let me tell you how the Londoners do it. Most will leave the city in the early morning to arrive in Devon before noon. That allows for enough time to arrive at the post office of whichever town they may wish to explore. The postmaster can tell the travelers where the bed and breakfasts are (and occasionally make a referral regarding the travelers taste). Then the travelers can wander from one place to the next until they are satisfied sufficiently to settle down for the day, weekend, or however long they may stay. It adds an exploration ethos to the journey, which adds to the fun of the trip! There are more than enough bed and breakfasts in Devon to accomodate everyone, so if one lodge is full, just move on to the next.

I enjoy Devon for the historic architecture (not only Saxon and Norman, but pre-historic sites too). Most come for the sheer relaxation, others to enjoy the pastoral scenery. If you have visited London one too many times and want to get out of the bustling city, rent a car and discover a bed and breakfast in Devon. It's the most beautiful place in England.

Yorkshire has to be up there as it has a beautiful coastline, some fantastic cities and towns ie. York, Leeds, Sheffield and Beverley not to mention countless others, but it`s best feature by far has to be the Dales and north york moors.

I love England - and Scotland, and Wales. Never been fortunate enough to go to Ireland.
It is said that "Home is where the heart is" so the most beautiful place to me was driving across Bedminster Down on the A38 and looking across to the left to see Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge; it always meant that I was coming home.
We've just returned from a few days in the Derbyshire Dales - magnificent; I knew St. Ives in Cornwall before it became commercialised (fabulous), have camped in the Forest of Dean - The Wye Valley takes some beating in the Autumn;
treked across the Yorkshire Moors (eerie), Devon is glorious, (half my mother's ancestors came from North Devon and half my father's from South Devon), Somerset is great (more ancestors). The only part of the English Countryside which does nothing for more is the East Coast fenland. I've boated through there and the phrase "dull as ditchwater" springs to mind! Sorry Fen dwellers!!
See if you can find some copies of Readers' Digest travel books for great pictures.

Its gotta be the North East, theres lots of different types of scenery within 2hours - The Lake District is just 90to180 mins away. Then we have the Moors, The Northumberland Coast, Hadrian's Wall Country, The Dales... The list goes on :)

'Er indoors!!
I live in a tiny rural village in Cornwall, I am surrounded by open countryside, woodland, and I have a river running at the bottom of my garden. It is beautiful, and my village was the inspiration for "wind in the willows" I am only 5 miles from Looe, and Polperro, and I consider myself to be extremely lucky to live somewhere so gorgeous. I was in the Lake District 2 weeks ago, and that is beautiful too, but I found the people unfriendly, and the whole place was just so crowded for the middle of October, at least in Cornwall, the emmitts go home.
