London City Airport is right in the heart of London but only accommodates short take off aircraft and helicopters.
Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted all have good rail links to the city but Heathrow is the shortest distance. |
|

I don't believe it!

Heathrow or City Airport. Heathrow has the Heathrow Express and the Tube and City Airport has DLR links to major tube stations. |

Heathrow has the Tube Piccadilly Line and the Heathrow Express train to Paddington Station (Tube 30 minutes to Earls Court, 48 minutes to Piccadilly Circus; Heathrow Express 15 minutes to Paddington). Gatwick Airport has the Gatwick Express train to Victoria (30 minutes), Southern trains to Victoria (33 to 37 minutes), First Capital Connect trains to London Bridge (30 minutes) and Kings Cross 42 minutes. Stansted Airport has the Stansted Express train to
London Liverpool Street (42 minutes) and Luton Airport has First Capital Connect trains to London St Pancras (33 minutes). All these services run frequently |

It's easy to get into the center from all of them, but it depends on where in the centre you want to go:
Heathrow: Hammersmith, Westminster, All West End,
Paddington, Islington
Gatwick: South London, Victoria, West End
Stansted: East London, The City, Tottenham
Luton: Paddington, West End
City: Docklands, Greenwich, The City |

stansted or heathrow.
Stansted express takes you straight from Liverpool street to stansted. And you can also get the picadilly line straight to heathrow. |

City Airport is located in the Docklands area of the City but as others have pointed out, it only accommodates short-haul flights. Plus you need to use the DLR which operates approximately 5.30am - 12:00midnight, and I'm not sure if there's any transport outside of these hours.
If cost is a factor for you, then Gatwick wins for being both convenient AND economical. The overground rail will cost you just over £8.00 and will take you in to a variety of different stations including London Bridge and Blackfriars, taking about 30 minutes if you're lucky.
Luton Airport is on the same line so goes into the same stations and costs around £10.00, and this will take around 40 minutes.
Heathrow Airport is around £8.00 on the tube, but this will take you at least an hour, as well as being generally crowded and unpleasant. If you want to take the Heathrow Express (from Paddington) which is very quick and efficient, it will cost you around £15.00.
Stansted is just a pain in the ***. Again, I believe the cost is around £15.00 on the overland rail, but I tend to use the National Express coaches as they're half the price but then this takes well over an hour.
So, given the choice I always go with Gatwick (first choice) and Luton (second choice) based on cost and convenience. Plus, I try to avoid Heathrow if possible due to its horrendous queues. |

City is more or less in the centre of London. If all the tubes stopped working it wouldn't be that long a walk! (yes - I've done it!)
Heathrow & City both have direct links into the tourist areas of London if that is your question - although I really wonder whereabouts it is you really want to get to!? |

Stansted, heathrow and gatwick all has rail services to them from London. Heathrow also has the tube. Stansted train leaves from Liverpool Street, Gatwick from Victoria, Heathrow from Paddington
London City has the Docklands light Railway
from Bank / Tower Gateway
Luton in Bedfordshire, has a train service from Farringdon, Kings Cross Thameslink, and other station to Luton Parkway, then a 2 min bus shuttle to the Airport |
