The Highlands are beautiful and have lots of good walking. The areas around Ben Nevis and near Fort William are nice.

My favourite towns are Inverness (at the northern end of Loch Ness) and Ayr (on the south west coast below Glasgow).

Edinburgh is also wonderful and has lots of things to do and see. Steer clear of Glasgow though because it's horrible.

Then the very best places in Scotland are
1. East Lothian, close to Edinburgh, beautiful part of Scotland and close the the coast with nice beaches. There are many nice towns and villages such as Haddington, North Berwick and many more.
2. Aberdeenshire again on the coast near to Aberdeen and lots of choice of small towns/villages
3. Ross & Cromarty particularly the Black Isle - not really and island but close to the sea and Inverness.

Anywhere on the West coast but if you go to the West Highlands you have the added attractions of all the islands - large and small - Skye, Canna, Eigg, Muck, Rhum, Coll. Head for Larger towns like Oban and Fort William - the rail journey from Glasgow to Mallaig is stunning - then visit the islands.

Edinburgh, Stirling and Inverness are all very nice cities with lots to do and see around them. Ayrshire coast, especially Ayr, Prestwick and Troon is also very nice and has v. good transport links to rest of country as well as being ~45 mins to Glasgow which has the best shopping in Scotland

Raiders Road, New Galloway Forest - especially if you like to get away from all from it all - very peaceful

dumfries is a lovely place once voted the healthiest place to live

all the time in the world
edinburgh - best city in europe, the trossachs are beautiful too, anywhere north of glasgow and edinburgh is gorgeous in my experience

The main roads (actually all of the roads) leaving Scotland are the best things about Scotland

Mind you if Hadrian had built a big pub instead of a wall there wouldn't have been any jocks here in England!

you ask a simple question and you end up with anti scottish comments ah well the small minded will have their fun ! as to your question most of scotland is very nice but as with every where it has its down side .good luck with your new job

coming from scotland I can tell you its not cold and wet all the time. Some of the nicest places are Loch Lomond, Stirling, Aberfoyle, Edinburgh. Regardless of where you there will always be some rough areas, if you are not a drinker then I would suggest you go nearer to the cities / towns so that you can find alternative things to do. As the further away from the towns you go the less recreational clubs etc there will be. Good luck

Most of it but stay away from the towns,

Edinburgh is fantastic for tourist stuff and shopping. There are loads of bars and restarurants. We used to go every two years for the Rugby and always had a fantastic time. The people are lovely.

It is cold in winter, and it gets dark quite early, around 4.00 pm.

I reccomend that you live in Perth, which is well located to reach all the major cities, and in a beautiful county besides.

The west coast, Oban and some of the islands would be great places to live, Mull immediately springs to mind. The weather is wet up there for sure, but the Gulf Stream warms the west coast, so the winters are quite mild.

I also like Dumfries and that area around the border south of Edinburgh towards Newcastle.

It is all very beautiful and Glasgow and Edinburgh are both nice cities with all of the benefits of modern city life, of course they both have areas that are rather less than salubrious.

Stirling is a lovely town and St Andrews is nice and right on the beach. St Andrews is more than just golf - it's a lovely town but can be a bit pricey. And it often is overrun by foreigners so you lose some of the Scottishness, I think. I like the Outer Hebrides but the shopping is really limited there but the beaches are wonderful. Lots of great little towns, Killin, Gairloch... come to mind. Enjoy your stay!

mountains and the lochs are really nice places .....the towns and citys are hellholes

Edinburgh is wicked! Ben Nevis is beautiful - be warned the food is really fattening up there everything is battered and cooked in loads of oil!

The Edinburgh Festical in August is great the golf is fantastic, the scenery is beautiful and the people are lovely!

You will have a great time! I hope you drink!
