I love Edinburgh. It is beautiful - with some fantastic buildings. You should go and visit the castle - it is really good value. I love the Scott monument too but there are quite a few stairs to go up there.
In any event, where ever you decide to go - have a great weekend! |

Try York. I've been there and it's really neat. |

Edinburgh!! Fun place to be, especially on weekends.
Also, if you're looking for outdoorsy/scenic stuff to do, Scotland in general is the best place. Just take the West Highland Line to Fort William from Glasgow. |

Would help if you told us where you live!
Virtually any UK city is accessible by train. It also would help if you said what you were after, arts, culture, seaside, night life, shopping, etc..?
Bath is nice, Oxford is lovely for a day trip. |

Edinburgh is lovely and there is loads to do there.
On the train up from London to Scotland there are lots of places worth a visit, namely York, Durham, Newcastle.
Bath is also supposed to be great. |

Bath, England is lovely. We just returned from a long weekend there. Tour the Roman Baths, take a canal ride, tour the lovely countryside and MUST SEE STONEHENGE only 30 minutes away. Train station is right in town and many travel to and from London and other parts of the UK. You'll have a memorable weekend...the village and area are breathtaking and fun! |

I can't believe this.
22 answers and none of them says Manchester! |

I would recommend Manchester. Stay at the Rosetti or the Midland. Visit Urbis, Selfridges, The Museum of Science & Industry, The Comedy Store, etc. There are great restaurants, people are friendly and it's no longer the dump it was 10 years ago. You will be pleasantly surprised. |

Try Leamington Spa. Right in the centre of England and has good rail connections to everywhere. Only a few miles from Warwick with it's fine medieaval castle, (they say the finest in the world.) Stratford on Avon is a must for you culture vultures. Just 15 minutes by car or train. |

York in the north or Oxford in the south of England. Inverness in Scotland. Dublin in Ireland. I don't know Wales very well. Try looking at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tocs_maps/maps/network_rail_maps.htm |

As I'm a Londoner my favourite week-end break is Bath . It has beautiful architecture, very good hotels and restaurants, the Roman baths, there's lots to see and do. You could also visit the Somerset countryside , (Cheddar Gorge)which is a short journey away by bus or train.
Otherwise I would agree with Jamie g, London or Brighton.
P.S. Bath does the best cream teas in the UK!! |

Depends on your origin - most weekend break places have train stations in or near by ,if not a bus stop.LOL
WHY would anyone want to spend a weekend in Madchester???? |

London is very expensive but Brighton is great i went to Eastbourne last year for the weekend and it was a perfect get away place. |

My vote goes to Brighton. It's got great nightlife (no, not just gay clubs), lots of interesting shops for all age groups (the lanes are great for antiques, the north lanes for second hand clothes, jewelery, books and vids) and a romantic old sea front. It is, however, not exactly the quietest of places, so if you just want to get away from it all, go to the west country instead. |

i know it seems an obviuos answer, but London is the best city in the world. If you dont fancy that try Brighton, its a lovely town with something for everyone. Just dont go to Tilbury, its a s**thole |

Edinburgh is great for a weekend break. There's so much that you can do there.
Plus Edinburgh is located on the main railway route on the east coast (and has its own international airport) so it's a very easy city to get to, no matter where you're travelling from :) |

All answers are good. But what about Newcastle/Gateshead/Durham. All within 12 mins of each other via train. Its changed a great deal over the last 18 yrs. You have miles of coast to see, riverside walks to sit and have a cuppa, pubs and clubs to suit all. Over a thousand years of history. Segadunum is great. |
