Hello from Bergen, Norway. I can give you a first hand account. Here in Bergen, we see a TON of rain, ice, and snow. The rain is near constant and very much year round. Grey skies are an almost daily occurrence. I am an American from Pennsylvania, and I am used to smooth weather and distinct seasons. It was very hard to adjust to this, and I still haven't really. When you are somewhere like Bergen where there isn't a whole lot to do and no real conveniences, it really gets you down, especially if you live somewhere secluded. Year round rainy days (and not to mention bad hair days) are enough to make anyone a little sad.

i dont think they are.
denmark is voted the happiest place on earth and it is in that area.

England is a "winter country"??

It might be far north, but they barely have winter.

Yeah cos those people in hot deserty countries, oh, like Iraq and Afghanistan are having a right good ol' time at the minute, eh?!

Sαмміе Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ
I don't think they are.
Come to North England and you'll soon see what I mean.

I've often thought Russians and other Eastern Europeans look really stern, rather than sad. I just don't think it's in the nature to be 'smily' people, not that they are really miserable. Germans are quite reserved at first but cvan be quite jolly. Don't think the English are sad, they are quite humourous and like a good time, though all of northwestern Europe is a bit more reserved with emotion compared to the south.

winter depression effects some people... im sure not ALL of the people there are sad.

Ello Guv
Your analogy is correct but your example arnt, suicide and depression rates are higher in colder climates because of low light levels and long winters with nothing to do. But this doesn't apply to England and Germany because they are temperate climates. Scandinavia and Russia have the highest rates.

You must be going to the wrong places, people in England love to enjoy themselves, going out Pubs, Clubs, etc
Go out to-night or any weekend and see for yourself, stop listening to the moaning *astards

Bambi
They don't have winter in England so that doesn't count. They virtually never ever have snow for example.

Personally I find constant heat and the lack of real seasons in many hot countries one of the most awful and depressing things in the world ...

There are miserable people in every country you go to. I bet you've never even met anybody who's English before.

SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder. When its winter there are fewer hours of sunlight, and darkness gets people down, sunlight gives hope. Plants don't grow during the winter an snow covers everything, so there is no color to give life to the environment, and seeing the same old white ground and gray sky really gets people down. Do you ever remember having a really sunny day during the winter? It makes you feel really good right? Thats because its something different and more bright. Bright colors=happy

It's because they don't get enough sunlight on their skin to generate Vitamin D. Lack of Vitamin D results in depression.

Tanya S
cold weather can get real depressing

strawberry yum yum : )
Maybe because we, as in Britain, are in the middle of an economic meltdown due to the banks in non winter countries, as in US, throwing away all the money !

Brian C
are they sad or just sad bastads
