British people, or Britons are the native inhabitants of Great Britain or citizens of the United Kingdom, of the Isle of Man, one of the Channel Islands, or of one of the British overseas territories.

Whether someone refers to their nationality as English, Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh, it does not necessarily mean that they do not also consider themselves British. For example, a person may consider himself British or Welsh, or equally British and Welsh, or mostly one or the other. However, even when given the widest common choice of options, some people still prefer to identify themselves as exclusively English (17%), Scottish (31%), Welsh (21%), or Northern Irish (21%), referring to aspects of their own culture and history which distinguish the nations of the United Kingdom from each other. These figures can be compared to those who identity themselves as exclusively British, England (10%), Scotland (4 %), and Wales (9%)

That word can be applied to 53 nations that are all part of the British Commonwealth. Usually it onyl refers to people from Great Britain proper, though.

in my understanding British is a person from Great Britain including Northern Ireland

and then British people are divided into English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh

or British is a citizenship (ie you may be Pakistani but if you have a British passport - you are also considered British as in British national)

The UK is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - they are most definitely not one in the same.

Strictly speaking only those from Great Britain are British, which is neither here not there regaring passports as we have UK passports anyway - not British ones. I don't know how it work for things like the Great Britain Olymic Team tho.

The UK and Great Britain are the same thing. They're both short for The United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Therefore- anyone who is from anywhere in the whole of the UK is British- so you can be British and Scottish, British and English, British and Irish, British and Welsh...

Similarly, though i know it's not what you asked- people have the same problem with Queen Elizabeth. She is NOT the Queen of England, like many of my fellow Americans say. She is the Queen of the whole UK.

Britishness just seems to be for the London Tourist Trade,
The Government, ( who wants everyone the same )
And the Media ( so not to upset anyone )

When most people think of Britishness, they think,

I can't believe how ignorant some of you people are (ie the people who said only the English can call themselves British or that people in Northern Ireland can't call themselves British - What rock have you been living under?!)

People who can be called British are citizens of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, but the people of Northern Ireland have the right to identify themselves as being either Irish or British depending on their personal preference.

Under convention, it's anyone from the British Isles.

This means Wales, England and Scotland.

However, due to convenience, it's applied to anyone under the dominion of the Queen. For example, a person born in Northern Ireland would be called British.
