I get very claustraphobic on the tube and have to keep my mind occupied so I count the stations on the tube map or read or listen to music...... I hate tube travel been stuck in too many tunnels in the dark with no news of what is going on. Recent attacks on the tube have added to this fear. |

I love the tube. Of course it's crowded, London is one of the biggest cities in the world. What do you expect? |

People are always complaining about London transport and yet London has just recieved the best city for public transport. |

I hate the tube. I love the escalators but standing on an empty platform unnerves me. I don't know how people wander around close to the edge. I always stand with my back to the wall. I have had many nightmares about being pushed onto the track in front of a train.
Good job I live in country. City-living would be too stressful for me. |

Yes, the combined body heat of everyone, the lack of fresh air and the stress of being in a crowd can cause anyone to fell hot and queasy. Its just a stressful situation for everyone, so you aren't alone! |

If you think that's bad - try the Paris Metro. It's ******* awful. |

I actually like travelling by tube and the more crowded the better - as long as no-one smells! It sure beats the bus. |

I don't think many people actually enjoy it! Certainly most people feel hot, but feeling faint is presumably the effect of panic. If bus travel is out of the question then there are things you can do to make underground travel as pleasant as possible. Firstly, if it is at all possible, make your journey by District, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan or East London lines. These are close to the surface and trains & stations are much more spacious. Also try and avoid the Bakerloo - in my experience it is the hottest line. Try and travel at quieter times, but if this is not possible then always travel in the first or last coach of the train. These are always emptier simply because people don't walk down the platform. Always sit or stand at the end of the coach next to the connecting door through to the next carriage. If the window in this door isn't open already you should open it. This lets in quite a lot of air. Never get on a very crowded train - just let it go and wait for the next one. If a train is overcrowded it normally means the interval in front of it is longer than it should be - but a heavy load will make that gap get worse and the train will get more and more overcrowded as it goes along. Meanwhile the following train will normally be just one signal length behind (about 90 seconds) and will be much quieter. If you find yourself on a ridiculously overcrowded train just get off it. Wait for an emptier one or walk/get a bus. Personally I have never had a very bad experience on the underground. If you read all the sensational stories in the press you will never go anywhere - remember all they want to do is sell papers (and often attack Ken Livingstone because of their political agenda). So try and relax and remember what I have said. |

I'm from an area of the NorthEast where people wouldn't dare step onto one of those things. It looks so small and metal and close. Most people won't even drive through to Newcastle, so there's no chance of navigating through London. |

No I love it. But I don't live in London anymore and only visit about 4 times a year. I love watching people trying to ignore each other and giving each other that strange London stare like you are an alien or something. But I guess I must of done it too when I lived there.
Most of my relatives don't travel on the tube anymore. One in particular would have panic attacks if he did. Try the buses instead. |
