Penny Lane is a road (or lane!). in Liverpool.
Most of the things mentioned in the song are nearby.
It runs from Sefton Park (mentioned in one of the Omen films when they look for the address in the phone book) up to Smithdown road.

At the junction there is a sort of roundabout which used to have a restaurant called Sergent Peppers but that shut a while ago.

The area is between Woolton and the city centre and has many Beatles links , Lennon had the bus journey along Smithdown road when he wrote 'In My Life'.

Strawberry Fields is also pretty close which used to be a children's home.
I pass Strawberry Fields on the way home from the supermarket and there's often tourists taking photos there.
There is a Magical Mystery Tour bus kitted out like the one from the film which takes in all the Beatle sites around Liverpool.

There's lots of wine bars and bistros in the area now, it's a good place for a drink.

The Penny Lane made famous by the Beatles is not a person, a street or a road, or even an avenue...it is a Lane in Liverpool that is called Penny Lane.

It's a Street in liverpool named after a famous slave trader.

Although rumour has it the song was actually written about Rose Lane but it didn't fit the metre of the song.

The street sign Penny Lane was stolen so frequently it has now been painted onto the side of a building

Corneilius
Penny Lane was not named after a coin, or a girls name, instead it was named after James Penny a well known and wealthy slave ship captain who was a leading campaigner in the Anti abolition movement and gave evidence to Parliament defending the slave trade.

Many streets in Liverpool are named after people who made their fortune in the slave trade (Blackburne Place for example).
