First of all much of Northern Scotland is mountainous and rugged and the lower lands in some parts are poor quality land for farming.

There used to be relatively large numbers of crofters in the Highland glens. They rented land from the laird or lord,
However, in the early 19th Century, the landowners realised that it now became more profitable to keep sheep on their land rather than crofters! The result was the forced removal of crofters from their settlements which were often burnt down.

The dispossessed crofters were put on board ships and taken to Canada or the Antipodes. that is why you Will see Scottish place names cropping up in former British Dominions ; Examples would be Calgary, Banff in Canada, Glenelg in S Australia, etc.

Weather hostile to family life, little in natural resources to encourage or sustain growth during the industrial revolution.

Because of the midges!

Northern Scotland is an idyllic place to live. It's very remote in places and just that is enough for most folk to live elsewhere. There will be little in the way of employment and for most of the year the weather will be cool compared to the rest of the UK. However, there is no finer place on God's earth.

Cold, bitter cold. There enough jobs for most of the locals,
but as we all know, over the years, 95% of the natives have moved away to warner latitudes. and wider prospects, both career and salarywise.. The English too migrated, but being blessed with a less frigid climate, more natural resources, and the push and pull of political leaders, a first rank naval tradition, both civil and military helped the southern neighbours to get to the top, even after the Empire was
liquidated, the Brittish Pound is Tops all over the world.
With the help of the Scottish bankers of course.Life in the Lowlands, Glasgow and Edinburg being closer to England are not as harsh as it is inThe Highlands

Because, historically, the English invaders threw the local population oout of their houses and off of the land in order to raise sheep rather than crops - the infamous Highland clearances.

The area has never been able to re-populate itself as a consequence.
