I lived in London (note spelling!) for 7 years and it definitely turns you into a different person.
Not only is it an expensive capital, but also to get from one place to another is a nightmare - poor transport service, crowded streets, long queues, busy roads, congestion charges... not to mention the weather! It just makes everything you're doing so stressful and you feel pushed around and agressive. It's sometimes hard to turn it off. I felt ANGRY and I didn't want to be that person... but then you pass it on and make others angry, it's a downward spiral. I'm sorry you've had to put up with all that.

I don't think you can say that people from certain areas are this or that, it's the other circumstances that make them what they are. Try to believe in the goodness of human nature and let the rest wash over you.

Rose
How do you know they are Londoners?!

If they're needing info from a travel centre, they're more likely to be out of towners - locals would probably know where they are going!!!

A couple of points - I agree with the earlier post that said generally people don't seem so hot on manners any more - it's nationwide, not limited to one city. And it's a shame.

Secondly - I hate generalisations. If your post had said 'Why are muslims so rude' or 'why are the french so rude' everyone would be up in arms and accusing you of racism rather than agreeing. Please don't tar everyone in a huge city with the same brush!

It's a city thing, i went to Edinburgh recently and found many people there to be very grumpy!
Glasgow seems to be the exception since people there are usually very nice!

rubydoo
I recently visited London, and I didn't find the the people there to be rude at all.

They don't know any better!

richie_b
too many people, not enough space, driven by making money ... its not grim up north (except for Manchester maybe)

ehc11
They always seem to be in a rush or too be busy or miserable to be polite! The best way to deal with call centre staff is to be polite and kind and have a laugh! They are human beings who are doing a job that i wouldn't want to do afterall.

lucid nightmare
coz we are better than everyone else!!!

i am a cockney girl & im very polite actually so we are not all rude but yes some people can be. as for people who dont like the cockney accent, i dont care what u think coz im proud so the way i talk.

HarryBore
there are so many people there, they lack the personal space to express themselves.

That vibe just grows and infects everyone eventually. Moving out of london after 5 years was the best thing I ever did, it changed me as a person!

Oi! Its not grim in Manchester.

I have never been to London and I dont need to, their accent drives me nuts. They seem very arrogant on the whole and I am glad I live quite faraway!

There are a lot of very busy, rushed people in London, so more of your London callers may be stressed and hence abrupt - especially since the generally rubbish London transport system adds to the stress...

... HOWEVER - none of that is an excuse to be rude. Keep being polite with them, but know in your heart they are lesser people because they can't be civil!

I have had the same thing - I have lived in London all my life, and I have noticed increasingly that people are soooo rude - why can't people let you off the tube as you get off? Why don't they ask for directions in a freindly and polite way? And why can't people say 'excuse me' if they want to get past you - I often hear people say 'sorry' - no I AM SORRY the phrase is 'EXCUSE ME'!!!

skyyn777
Count your blessing that you are not dealing with the Parisians!

Not just london. Its a general decline in morals and etiquette among the nation. Think about it, there are more low class people (sorry to sound snobby, but its true). Obviously more of them to reproduce creates even more of them to reproduce!!! The majority of them havent been brought up properly, and so dont know that its impolite to give orders, which is essentially what they are doing. Example. A young mother (probably about 24/25?) on hte bus with her two children (The eldest couldnt have been more 4 or 5) they're being a bit noisey as kids are. You know what she says to try and control them? 'Shat tha fack ap before a smack ya upsaad da 'ead' (shut the f*ck up before i smack you up side the head) and i just thought. Jesus! Thats how these kids are going to grow up thinking they can talk to people!!

eva
im from london and i am always polite to call centre staff. i guess i am the exception to the rule....
