Why are most Aberdonians so rude? |
Glaswegians are much more friendly. I've lived in Aberdeen now for 15 years but am originally from Glasgow. I had to move up here 'cos of my work. I find Aberdeen people (not all of them, but most of them) very snappy, rude and are totally lacking in manners. I was in Glasgow at the weekend there and noticed a huge difference with the people down there compared to up here. Nobody will even hold a door open for you here, and when you speak they look at you as if you're from another planet. Anyone else experienced this? Additional Details Halcon, you've branded me a 'Weegie' with a 'Taggart-style accent'. Very unkind and narrow minded of you. |

I was brought up in Aberdeen and would never go back. I think Aberdeen is really just a large "small town". In fact some say the riches generated from Oil have somewhat spoiled the place. But it does have its nice places and I think some people may just appear rude when they are shy or very busy.
There is a parochial feel about the city and there appears to be a minority there that appear to distrust anyone from outside the city.
I think Inverurie and Stonehaven and other places in Aberdeenshire are generally friendlier than Aberdeen.
It may be that West Coast people are just a lot friendlier than East Coast people.
However there are areas where people are friendly - some would say "Torry" despite being a poor neighbourhood is friendlier.
I agree that Glasgow is a very friendly place and is very cosmopolitan but remember it is only 2.5 hours away. Just count yourself lucky to come from such a friendly city but I guess you will also acknowledge that Glasgow is not perfect.
I hope you can at least focus on the positive aspects of Aberdeen and that you may perhaps start to enjoy living there - perhaps by meeting more like minded and friendly people in Aberdeen.
Best Of Luck. |

I have family who have been in Aberdeen for over 20 years, they are polite and friendly and so are the other Aberdonians I meet. |

I've just spent the day in Aberdeen, had doors held open for me, helpful advice and a chat at a bus stop, and the offer to carry a bag.
I wear a splint on my arm so perhaps that makes people more likely to help but I also wear a smile on my face and I think that's what really makes the difference. |

I moved here 5 years ago and I would agree that a lot of them are rude but I think people always see their own hometown through rose tinted glasses to a certain degree as well.
Also in Aberdeen, there is a huge divide between the rich and poor because of the oil industry which probably doesn't help. |

Have you met 'most' Aberdonians? If not why do you assume most of them are rude? Having spent all 23 years of my life living near Aberdeen and having an Aberdonian dad, an Aberdonian boyfriend and Aberdonian friends I can assure you that Aberdonians are no worse than Glaswegians, Dundonians or any other 'ian' of people! I think it is pretty hypocritical to call another answerer narrow minded when you are also generalising your own experiences to hundreds of thousands of people! Maybe her experience of Glaswegians is that they have a Taggart Style accent and so what she said is no worse than what you have said! If your experience with 'most' of the population of Aberdeen has been so continuously poor then maybe it is you who warrants it, rather than all these people being rude and snappy.
Also, if Glaswegians are all so very friendly and nice how did they manage to notch up one of the highest murder rates in europe? Do they thank you for your participation after they've walloped your brains out? I'm sure your response to this would be that all Glaswegians aren't murders and of course I already know this and am in no way saying they are. Until I've met them all I won't judge them. I suggest you save your judgements for the people you meet and don't make sweeping judgements about whole populations. After all, the actual statistics don't exactly favour Glasgow... |

I think you will find that real Aberdonians are very helpful & polite. The problem is that, since it is the oil capital of Europe, the place is full of people from all over the UK & indeed the world. Many shops & restaurants are staffed by people that are not native to Aberdeen.
I suggest you do not make sweeping generalisations about Aberdonians. Especially since you have taken umbridge to having Glaswegians called Weegie etc.
Also, it can't be all that bad if you have managed to stand it for 15 years. The road North also goes South. |

Hmmmm... there are a lot of Gaels in Glasgow and they are among the loveliest, friendliest people I have ever had the fortune to meet. Maybe if Aberdeen became more 'Gaelic' it might change? |

Perhaps they're looking at you strangely because you treat them with contempt, or perhaps because they're trying to comprehend your taggart like accent?
For goodness sake, people are people, and 'Dons are no less friendly than 'Weegies you know.
Try smiling a little more and making an effort.
You've been there 15 years so it can't be THAT bad can it?
Learn some Doric, that'll help.....
