I'm English ... I wouldn't have wanted to genitally mutilate my son at birth unless there was a good medical reason for it ... I've never heard any compelling reason why ALL boys should be circumcised ... so as far as I am concerned it is mutilation |

Because there is no medical reason to get circumcised. Most men in the world are not circumcised unless they are Jewish or Muslim. Circumcision is a religious thing and most people in England are Christians. The only reason why Americans get circumcised is because it's done in a hospital at birth and the only reason that happens is because it's what the parents tend to prefer.
The question should be "Why are most American men circumcised". Most people do it out of looks or because they think it's cleaner, but the reality is it serves no real medical purpose. Since it's painful and often unnecessary, then why should everyone else do it? It's just a cultural thing in the United States since that is the only english speaking country that still practices circumcision as routine. They don't do it anymore in Canada or Australia either. |

Circumcision first became intorduced as it is today in the early 1800's. It was used as a way to prevent masturbation. (masturbation was a deadly sin back then)
What would happen is if a boy was caught masturbating he would be taken to a doctor and he would be strapped to a table and circumcised with no pain medication. The pain would be punnishment for the "crime". Much like the most painful spaking in the world. Then the doctor would make his skin really tight so that masturbation, and erections would be painful, so that would keep him from masturbating. Also they removed the most sensitive part of the penis to make it less enjoyable, again so they wouldn't masturbate.
After that they made up a bunch of things that it cured, like epilepsy, lepearcy, blindness, and a lot of other bogus things. The myths have kept changing into todays time where they say it's cleaner or prevents infections, now the new claims are it helps protect against STD's which is a stupid claim that has NEVER been proven by any study.
It's most because of the myths that it's sapposed to prevent aweful infections and be so much healthier, when really an uncircumcised penis is just as healthy.
Also what is keeping the circ rate very high today. I say very high because I would like to see it drop to below 10% or idealy 0% for infant circumcisions. I think it's barbaric and cruel. Anyways it's at 50% still because people have gotten so used to having circumcised penises that doctors don't know how to deal with a foreskin or foreskin problems and parents don't want to take the time to teach their children about condoms, or showering. They are lazy and are ignorant of the facts that circumcision doesn't have any medical benfits what so ever. We just blindly circumciseour kids.
The rate is declining because more people are finding out that circumcision violates human rights and takes away a mans right to a full and intact body, and they are also learning that circumcision really doesn't have any medical benifits, they are just now dicovering that circumcision does more harm than any good.
Also it's taken Americans a lot longer than other countries.
Britain found out in 1990 that circumcision had no medical benifits and in one year the circ rate dropped from 50% to 10%.
The American Academy of Pediatrics hasen't reccomended this procedure since 1990. Yet people still do this.
I was circumcised at birth and I am restoring my foreskin, I have felt first hand how much sensitivity is taken away with this procedure and I can tell you something, people robbing their children of that much sexual pleasure (any at all) is child abuse in my eyes.
It's not right.

I noticed this watching Sex and the City the other day when one of the girls was really wierded out by the fact some guy wasnt circumcised.
I though it was just general that guys aren't unless they're Jewish or something?
I'm English, and have yet to come across a circumcised guy..
I find it wierd that so many Americas are when there's no need at all. |

I think its a cultural preference. I was raised thinking it was necessary for me to circumcise my sons and I did when they were born. I had also heard of the complications they could have when they were older and the hygiene issues and decided it was best. I worked at the hospital for years and there were times old men had to have a circumcision done for health reasons and its harder on them. as a baby they dont remember the pain. It just must not be common place in England although I am sure someone could request it. |
