Why are some Brits so anti-American?

I don't understand. Our brave WW2 troops saved England, including the rest of Europe, from German oppression. Shouldn't they be grateful to America?

Well, i live in england,uk. I hated americans until i actually went there and saw how great they were for myself. so kind and considerate. such amazing people, i love america. I used to think they were all fat and stupid, ive seen many people who are american do soooo much dumb stuff on tv, i guess its just the UK media and how americans are portrayed here on tv..and since most of us havent actually MET americans, we just belive what we see on tv for some reason. my aunty is british, she moved to america when she got married to an american she met who was stationed here in the usa airforce. and she loves america. i loved new york city when i visited there in 2006. England and Germany still dont really talk to each other much, i think that England is more american than european. i dont feel as if i "belong" in europe. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Well the British have supported the US in the wars so far

.

Aslan
the thing is you abstained from ww2 for YEARS before finally deigning to enter within. being 'grateful'? had we fallen then you certainly would have been next on the Nazi list of 'to conquer' so joining in was for your own good more than ours

plus we have reaped a lot of your cult groups here (they make a b-line here because of the similar language

then the superior attitudes and downright arrogance in some cases that comes over to the Brits

the constant demands for money from your TV evangelists either on TV or face to face is to a Brit as rude as showing their backside in public - it brings the churches here in the UK into disrepute

I wasn't aware that the Brits were anti-American.

My grandma surely wasn't aware that she was anti-american when she moved to the U.S. from England.

If I remember correctly, England has been America's strongest ally on this ridiculous "war on terror" that Bush started.

we kinda dragged them into Iraq and in a world view are ******* up world with oil and global warming and BUSH

asimenia
comments like .....Shouldn't they be grateful to America - make people so!

'The world revolves around us' attitude makes Europeans (not just Brits) dislike Americans (not individuals - it's politics and what the media portrays)

cadetskydome
They have no need to feel "grateful" (shouldn't WE feel grateful to them for helping us in Iraq?), but they shouldn't be anti-American either. And they ARE anti-American. I've been to the UK 3 times, and I've always been looked down upon.

In general, I think they hate our politics, and they hate the arrogant over-patriotism of our people.

ANSWER Way re the American so Anti British? or even so Anti United Nations.

After the war which Britain fought unassisted for so long the US came at the last minute realising that if Britain fell so would the US. At the end of the war the us then BILLED the UK billions of 1947 dollars for the work it did. this bankrupted the UK and only got paid off 4 years ago!

As a result of this the UK had shortages and rationing until the 1960's whilst the US had a boom and kept telling the UK how good it was doing.

its like thanking someone for saving your life by billing them for the time it took them to help you.

Your attitude to the US involvement in WWII is very biased and ignores many important issues which have been chosen to ignore.

Secondly the US tends to REMIND the UK it used to be a colony and is now better than they are - that is called ribbing salt into sore wounds and you wonder why the UK find this unattractive!

Combined with the way the US ignores all international law saying we wont be told what to do - and allowing human rights violations at home whilst condemning the same thing elsewhere - its called being 2 faced!

Come on if the US judges itself by the same standards it does tohers you would not be so proud as you are now.

Britain is not perfect it may be pompous, over priced and reserved but at least its honest about itself and treat everyone the same including its own citizens.

By the way I am NOT anti anyone - even the US what I am anti is hypocrisy and this question shows that ignorance of this is rife still!

Tony
we are america's most closest allie!!!! what are you talking about??? it is the rest of the world that you need to make friends with.

misseasygoing
Let the past go. Britain is strong on its own and unique in its own right. Why do you expect that they should be "grateful" and therefore be pro America? Is that the only thing the US has done in the world so therefore are wonderful? can you look at the last 50 yrs and say that Britain should applaud them for all the mis steps they have also taken?
Get over it.
Britain was there long before the US ever was., Where do you think most of America originated from?

Pedestal42
Err...
Britain might just be the most pro-American country in the world, (Israel excepted and that's a dependency relationship)
So if you think a good proportion of Britons don't like you...

...has it occured to you that there might be something not to like?

And yes, I do appreciate how much America has done for Britain and Europe, as well as its failings.
(You could list some of America's failings, couldn't you? No country is perfect. I can do you a short or long list of Britain's faults without too much trouble, but I love my country.)
I'm not anti-American: I have visited three times with great pleasure.
I am "anti- " elements of American government policy, and certain cultural assumptions, attitudes and blind spots.

I don't know where you get that impression.

Why do Americans run down their own country?

It's all to do with individuality, not the whole nation

THE MIGHTY RA
It sounds like you know completely nothing about history or politics, we were grateful to america by bankrupting our country for 30 years paying you in full for your help with weapons and so on... If you havent realised the Germans never invaded Britain, so in actual fact we werent rescued from the Germans by them, America entered the war because it came under attack from Germanies allies (The Japanese). You will find that most British people like americans, but what British people cannot stand (and is the thing I love about them most) is some jumped up little idiot telling us that we ought to be grateful to them for some historical event, like your good self, we also are fully intolerant of astoundingly dumb ill educated people, a category which you also fit into perfectly.By your reckoning you ought to be grateful to us for originally colonising America, so inventing you, otherwise you would have been a spanish catholic or something and grateful for helping you out with your illegal war of terror.

gaftfreak
Well there's the whole REVELOUTION THING!!!!

Not to mention that when America finally DID get to Europe (years after the fighting had already started) and kicked some Nazi but, we took all the credit for it. Show me ONE british soldier in "Saving Private Ryan".

Ken B
Conversely - why do so many americans hate we brits - after all we handed over all our inventions (and all of our money)so that you would come and save us in WW2

Because of the legacy of anti-americanism the left parties inherited from their commie background in the 1920's and 1930's.

Debbie C
oh dear god that THAT IS WHY WE GET PI**** OFF! We aren't greatful to you for WW2 cause you should have got your act together sooner and not just got involved when it suited you! I'm way more greatful to the Russian who took a major pounding for the cause!

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE!

Hea N
WW2 is over, that's not the issue.

the issue is that most of the world is anti-america right now.
we think we know everything.

ex. telling Nepal they should give up their tradition of a young Godess. our psychobabble has gained us world acclaim as nosy and full of self.

RAF
Oh shut up.
You lot entered the WW2 at the last minute.
If it hadn't been for the UK, and our brave resistance, the war would've lasted much longer.
And Americans... they are rude.
And I can say this because I'm practically American.
I was born in this bloody country, but I'm also a Brit by blood and I lived in both countries.

The world wars are history now and we both had bankrupcy. Don't forget that America was still fighting Japan long after the Nazis had been overthrown. We also both put alot of money into bringing German back on it's feet again.

I consider, as a Brit, America as our strongest allies. It's our differences in culture. Even though we are so alike.

About 300 years ago we were pretty anti-England also though. I think they try to make us inferior. Who cares, we could kick there asses anyday, they have horrible teeth, and not many hot women.

Except for Martine McCutcheon of course.

Andre W
Because we ****** the Brits up the *** one to many.
