I remember years ago - when I was a CB operator - Milton Keynes had the handle (nick-name) of 'Polo City' !

It has a good accident and emergency dept at the hospital...they put my leg in plaster when I broke my foot, and it might have a lot of roundabouts but none are as bad as this one...

It's what is called a "New Town" (it isn't new now) meaning that it was planned and then built in stages. There are one or two old bits to it, like Stony Stratford, but mostly the housing is new.

Because it was planned, the planners made huge road systems to take you round and through the place - big wide roads, no traffic lights, roundabouts to keep the traffic moving. From the main roads, you can't really see all the housing because of the way it was planned.

Each of the areas of housing is like a little village (but planned not organic) and there is a dobbing great shopping centre in the middle of it all.

One reason that Milton Keynes is actually joked about is because it has, to an extent, succeeded as a new town, unlike, for example, Cumbernauld, which is a derelict waste of 1960's housing, pound stores, and burnt out cars - and is shameful in its poverty.

This success is probably due to Milton Keynes' proximity to London, its direct and fast train link to London and its location in the more affluent south east...

It's INSANE.
It's like navigating yourself round a massive grid reference system, and there are roundabouts everywhere! The shopping centre is also too big for its own good!
I actually live in the town which has been dubbed the Milton Keynes proto-type and I can understand why - where I live is just roundabouts, but the roads are easier to follow.

I think it was based on an american town in how its laid out with wide streets and lots of round abouts...i only went there once to a large mall thats there for good shopping....apaprt from that i did not see much of it except the roads and roundabouts.

its just cos sooooo many people who have came from their have made an icon of themselves and made a fool of themselves but it will all fade away soon as something new will come up...bad luck if it happens there again HA
