To be honest I have absolutely, no solution for you answer nor do i have any experience with shoes at the side of the road, i am also in the UK but see no signs of "discarded shoes" at the side of the motorway.

My guess is that they are old and it is kind of exciting to throw shoes in that specific area because other people do and since it is on the moterway, it is convienent.

Thanks for teaching me something today!!! I will be sure to check "the shoes at the side of the motorway" next time.

... perhaps these people take that advice to heart. Half way down the M6, their shoes melt from the sheer heat produced, and they decide to discard them by the side of the road.

...or, the Raelian revolution people are right, and aliens are abducting people (but not their shoes, naturally)

In my area I know that two shoes tied together and thrown over the telephone wires mean that there is a drug dealer operating nearby.

I think that maybe people have stinky shoes on a long car journey and change to nicer ones and chuck the smelly ones. I know that would probably be the circumstances that I would leave some by the roadside.

I will forever be looking for shoes now on a long journey :-)

Maybe they just gave up on them, and sometimes there really Icky shoes and they have the annoying velcroe stuff, But throwing things out of windows can sometimes be quite fun :)

Cos people don't know how to keep Britain tidy and just throw rubbish out the window or dump it in laybys etc and it just gets spread , lorry drivers peeing in plastic bottles and discarding them is another bug bear, also fly tippers, some workers and general wasters.

The people who make the motorways want to make their mark.

People dump the shoes that they don't want there in hopes that when cars run it over, the rubber will meld with the highway.
