Because the US economy is low, the value of the US dollar is falling in relation to other countries' currency, so one dollar is worth less in pounds than a Euro is, for example. |

Because the pound sterling is very strong against the American dollar. This means it is expensive for Americans over here...but dead cheap for us over there!!! YiPPEE!!! |

It is compared to most of europe too but places in Scandanavia where it is pricey, they earn more money. Their wages and cost of living balance more. We've just got a high cost of living and low salaries-that's what makes it hard. |

Because the thieving, slimy, greedy government scabs like to rob the British people in EVERY way they can. |

You mean the UK, not England. Things are expensive to you because the pound is very strong. |

Cave babe has a point. The UK has one of the lowest purchasing power levels in Europe, ie. pay to cost ratio. It's quite annoying knowing people in some of the poorer countries in Europe can afford to buy more in thier own respective countries than you can, even though you live in the 4th richest country in the world. The only good aspect is that when you go abroad, the pound is usually stronger than the local currency and then you get to feel what its like to have purchasing power! |

Cause we get positively hammered with taxes by the bitches who run this country. |

There are a few reasons:
1) The US Dollar currently isn't worth very much
2) The UK is one of the most overcrowded countries in the world, so buying or renting property for retail or to live in or for any other purpose is more expensive and this pushes up prices elsewhere
3) People in the UK are taxed more, although they get things for their tax like free healthcare and most of the cost of going to college
4) People in the UK earn a lot more. The UK minimum wage is worth about $11.50
5) People in the UK have money to spend and this in itself pushes up prices. E.g. there are loads of people looking for good carers to look after their children, so those carers can charge more. There are lots of people who can afford a £200 restaurant meal, so more restaurants charge that much
6) For some products, mainly petrol and cigarettes, the sales tax is really high - when buying petrol in the UK, half of what you pay goes to the government |

Don't know really. We use as much near slave-labour as US. Can't understand it. People who actually work here and make things demand higher wages but there aren't many British people doing that anyway. It used to be said it was because we're an island - things cost more to get here. Don't think that's true any more. |

It's called tax. We pay a tax (otherwise known as VAT) on everything we purchase. As well as a tax being stopped from our wages. This covers things like free NHS hospital treatment, improvement of things like schools & public sector places. |
