Yeah that is true. Personally, i'm not a british kind of, i have chinese parents but born in Britain and lived in uk for 7 years. Everyday that i have lived so far, i have heard at least one racist/hate/mean comment at least once a day. For example everytime i have an english lesson my friends are like she's a polish teacher why is she teaching us english we probably could do a better job, if someone said something like that to a british, there would be unfair consequences. There's not a perfect country in the world, like there's no perfect person in the world.... nothing's perfect generally unless you are in love.
In addition to a comment someone made, taking the mickey of a foreigner especially is not funny and not something to be admired!
However, i do agree that not all british people are like that just a slight majority that stands out. |

Genaeralising a little bit aren't we?
Not every British person fits your stereotype |

That's a bit of a broad statement to make .... I'll take criticism all day if I realise I can learn from that criticism!! |

You seem to be tarring all of us British with the same brush. Some of us can take objective criticism because if we didn't we wouldn't try and change for the better. I expect it is the same the world over. Some people aren't mature enough to take it. It has to be done in a reasonable manner of course. |

The answer is quite simple really .... many years ago, when we were mere peasants, many a viking, frog and spaniard used to come over, nick our kids, gold and s*** our women. Then they p***ed off only to return to do it again l8r. And you're surprised why we brits are so defensive!!!! |

I suspect the UK user-base of Yahoo Answers is skewed and there are far more kids & teenagers contributing, and this doesn't fully represent our society (not to say their opinion doesn't count, but it can sometimes be immature)
Also I think some topic areas of Answers tend to get hijacked by people who have a less-than-common view that they want to promote. Others seem to enjoy stirring up argument for no good reason or have a hidden agenda.
Noone should generalise a country's people from Yahoo Answers contributions - it's not representative.
Eg you may be a 50-year old American woman with a lifetime of experiances and a more developed & rounded view of the world unknowingly reading a knee-jerk response to a question answered by a 14 year old boy in England who has just been studying eg the topic of the Vietnam War in his history class. He suddenly thinks he knows everything about USAmericans but perhaps doesn't yet appreciate that its one part of history, times have changed, people have changed.
Then of course there's the fact that someone can mis-understand a response because text as a communication medium is limited. You can't tell how sincere the writer is, their emotional state, where they mean to emphasize points etc. |

We like giving as good as we get. We put people in their place if we feel they are too big for their boots. We hate arrogance.
Also, some foreigners dont understand our humour and mistake it for being nasty. Taking the mickey out of foreigners is very British and is to be admired ;) |

Try criticising america
I'm british and the reason we cry foul is cause we are oh sooo much better at criticising ...
..............ourselves.
We don't actually think we are the only perfect country in the world but we haven't discovered the other one yet
don't take us seriously we don't |

The brits are usually the first to make fun of themselves, we celebrate our rubbishness. but we also take a pride in our achivements.
i think the main problem is that our dry humour is often missunderstood.
just look at our comedians, they mock other countries but mock the brits twice as much, and we can laugh about it. |

If you are from the good ole US of A as I suspect that really is a strange question!
If not, the question is worth an answer, at least in part. I don't think this country is anywhere near perfect, but it's a matter of record how many people of other nations want to live here.
Wherever you are from I don't get the "self awareness" bit. That seems to an abusive "Brit" like me to be just a piece of psychobabble to make you sound intelligent...
That OK with you? |

Well we most likely do this as our country is garbage. We have more depression and homelesspoeple than most other countries (with the exception to 3rd world countries obviously).
Im a brit but to be honest i look up to other countries (with the exception of the U.S.A) as thier standards of life are far better than the standards of life here in the U.K |

I actually think on the whole we can. But people that can't tend to be more vocal.
I'm English - now you can feel free to criticise me for a lot of things and I really don't mind, however I would disagree with anything that I thought you were wrong about.
I've always thought that actually one of the good things about being English is that we are very good at taking the p*ss out of ourselves, yes we do the same to other nations but if you look at TV for example we do tend to poke fun at ourselves more than others. |

If you look at some answers on here you might also be forgiven for thinking that all 'Brits' HATE their own Country! It's the perfect country to hate perhaps? or is it just that we are very good at handling critisism, we do it to ourselves all the time.
I've seen some very nasty comments from people of other nations on here so I find your assertion that it is only us Brits that can't take it laughable!
Grow up and realise people are the same the World over, there are some nice, some nasty, some who can do some things and some that can't.
The reason there are a lot of questions on here from Brits could be because its the UK & Ireland part of the site, I've been on the all English speaking questions and it's often full of American's who also seem to think that America is so perfect!
I don't automatically think that ALL American's are the same so please enough of the stereotyping! It's as Racist as you can get! (Oh but us white British aren't ever subjected to Racism are we?) |

The word British stands for a huge, multi-cultural nation. I think that the idea that anyone (regardless of race, culture or religion) that just happened to live, or move onto this small island suddenly becoming unable to take criticism is an interesting idea, perhaps it's somthing that's put in our drinking water, that would explain why all the other countries in the world are so fair minded compared to us.
I do hope that you don't regard my answer as criticism, I'd so hate to offend (must be the half American blood in me) |

I think this is actually quite a complicated question. For a start - who are British people? That used to be quite a simple question to answer. British people were either English, Scottish or Welsh. Now there is nothing these British people like better than criticising each other and generally it is done and received with good humour. As a Scot, I am quite happy to join the Welsh and criticise everything about the English! But history shows us that we are the first to stand, shoulder to shoulder with the English if the criticism is dangerous and comes from outside this "family".
Nowadays, British are classified as anyone who is born within our island. Perhaps this expansion of the description contributes to this perceived reaction to other countries. Perhaps the reaction to criticism should be one of the tests for being British. |

just keep swimming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nope were jus to bone idol to realise that we critise them and then we get offended when someone says somthing bad about us.

first of all I'm English sweetheart not British , but i get what you mean ,we are a small nation and over the years had to put up with many attacks on our nation stretching back thousands of years, and this has instilled a very strong sense of patriotism and a fighting attitude , and we will defend our nation too the death , saying this i in no way think our nation is perfect , we have alot of problems just like every other country, and to be honest with you from what i have seen on here i have yet to see many polite answers too any questions about nationality |

I don't think anyone thinks this is a perfect country, no where is perfect as such. I have to say - and I am not biased since my Mum is Chinese - the Brits are very self effacing and modest when it comes to publising their own talents.
Unlike the Americans, a lot of Asians, and Aussies (whoops am I being critical) Brits are actually a lot less likely to kick up a fuss and talk about how wonderful they are (even if they are).
I think its just a vehicle on which we are communicating - that is a online answering system, which brings out the rudeness in people, most people you meet in day to day life are not like that. |

Quit moaning and grow a pair, we're no worse than anyone else.
We also use sarcasm quite a lot, which may give people the wrong ideas about what we think of things. |

No, it is the good old US of A that thinks that it is the only perfect country and is prepared to spend more tax dollars per citizen than any other country in the world so as to have the power to crush any country which does not agree with the American point of view. |

Self-deprecation is a national sport. We do take the mickey out of ourselves for years and when I say years, I mean centuries.
We're not perfect but we are pretty darned good. We haven't been invaded since the Romans/Vikings/Normans, which means over a thousand years but we have helped others out with their invasions.
Unfortunately for the first time in history, we are on the side of the aggressor this time. We have a Prime Minister who committed us to support the invasion of a weaker country by a larger and stronger one.
Fortunately, the good news is that Prime Minister is about to sink into obscurity and his successor will hopefully listen to the Great British Public and take us out of this non-war and a sense of fair play can resume.
If you think we can't laugh at ourselves, you obviously haven't seen Al Murray - the pub landlord. He's hilarious exactly because he pokes fun at our jingoism and patriotism. |
