The same reason they built Stonehenge so near the A303.

Heathrow was much quieter back when the first towers were built a thousand years ago. Flying machines didn't make much noise back then, so it was a matter of convenience for people of wealth to be near the airport. It only took an hour by carriage back then.

Security was pretty tight, because of all the terrorism by the old Saxons, whom God clearly didn't favour. It took much longer to search passengers through all the layers of garters and petticoats which made the boarding process very tedious.

So proximity to the airport was the only way to shave time on a journey over to Anjou or Aquitaine.

haha. I know! Oh by the way ive been looking for the circus in Picadilly for days now and cant find it anyway! You'd think London being a Theme park for the Yanks it would come with better maps. I personally believe theres not enough people dressed as Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins cos thats the REAL London! Anyway Im off to get a bus to Scotchland. Have a great day!

Lol very funny. At least I hope you are joking!

I think you will find that the castle came first!
The original castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1070.
Heathrow airport on the other hand started it's life in the 1930s as the Great Western Aerodrome.
Why the Royals didn't object to the planning though is another question!

david f
Queen Victoria built it there to make it easier when she flew to Balmoral.

Hey people enjoyed that question - there are so many replies. I think Heathrow is a good location and it doesn't seem to bother Windsor or the people in the castle. The queen used to be there a fair bit but not so much, as far as I can see, now. In the past I have seen her riding within Windsor park.

I beleive the king at the time hated the journey along the M4! although I could be wrong

Actually I think it was very kind of the Royals to allow the airport to be built so near the castle.

William the Conqueror built the original castle and being the Norman occupier of a Saxon country, he anticipated trouble from the locals. He chose a site close to the airport so that in the event of siege, the garrison could be quickly supplied and replenished by air. The Saxons, however were ahead of the Normans and due to their Germanic blood ties, had help from that part of Europe in the form of fighter aircraft. When a transport aircraft was shot down scattering horses, bows, arrows and armour over the fields, many a Norman was heard to shout 'Look what those murdering Fokkers have done now'.
