What's So Funny?

Why do ALL British people say "rubbish"?

Is it a cultural thing and what the hell does it mean?

sarch_uk
That's rubbish...not ALL British people say rubbish, where do you get that idea from...
(That has been said in context)

Is it cultural...depends on which culture, as we are supposed to be a multi cultural society...

Rubbish is also what you label as trash.

????? why do silly americans use "like" in every sentence? It means garbage or crap.

rubbish is the equivilant to saying "ridiculous" or "that's crazy." and yes, it's a cultural thing. just like how americans say "like" in every sentence.

James M
It's so funny that Americans ask us what English words mean when you are supposed to know how to speak English. There is so much of what you say that I can't understand.

wrxjima
this question is just rubbish!

Scott Alexander
Im sure i heard an american say it once ..then i found out his name was john barrowman! Lol. "thats complete RUBBISH!!" is no different from "thats complete garbage!!" or "thats complete trash!!", and like those two words, can be used in any situation. "Rubbish" can be also used as a noun to describe public waste/refuse, although a "bin man" is used far more often than "rubbish collector". The word rubbish, in general, may not be used often, but it is understood everywhere in the uk and as far as im aware, also austrailia.

if you do not understand try a bit of revision and don't diss what you haven't bothered to learn about as that means you learnt rubbish instead of english, we use the english language here so what? Just I still know that what you call sh--e or garbage weird as it is just means the same as rubbish so I rather resent your talking such rot (do you understand that?). thank you :-)

Yes it's a cultural thing and it means something that is fit for the trash.

ladyfan
