Why do British people hate Americans so much?

There is a fundamental falacy in your question, which apparently most respondents to your question have bought into. It is ignorant to attribute emotions, values or beliefs to a whole group. Do you know any British people? Do you know all British people? How do you know they all hate Americans? If you had posed a similar question about homosexuals, a race, a religion, etc. this ignorance would have been more obvious. So, I find it interesting that the other respondents haven't called your presumption for what it is - prejudice.

I am an American who lived in England for 3 years. I became a part of the community and never, for one minute, felt hated...not even disliked...for being an American. They may not always agree with American foreign policy, laws, politics, etc. But then, what American always agrees with our government?!!?

As for "Yank" - it's nothing more than harmless slang. Some of my friends also teased me by calling me "the colonial." Based upon personal experience (so I cannot attribute this to all British - just the ones I know personally), they don't take themselves very seriously and have a wonderful, self-deprecating sense of humor. They appreciate when their jibes aren't taken as anything more than teasing...or as they say "taking the mick."

I am British by birth and I don't hate Americans.
It is so stupid to apply the word hate to a whole country which comprises millions of people of different characters.
I know that if the country of my birth ever had it's back to the wall those people stood shoulder to shoulder with us would be Yanks. ( which is a kind of slang for americans going back over 200 years)

They do not hate us actully they are the only country helping us out in Iraq helping us with this war!

Maybe some may not like us but the majority of them do or else they would'nt be helping us.
That one Prince dude over there is going to war he wanted to go he didnt even have to go but he chose to. And he has a high risk of to die over there because the soldiers of Iraq said they will kill him if he goes over there. But he is still going anyway.

I was not aware that British people hate us, when I was in England they were very nice and friendly. Yanks is short for Yankees!

Well, I've been told by a couple of ppl from there that they don't hate us. Man I sure hope they don't.....I'm going there in May. I love to chat and laugh a lot....I'll have to "test the waters" before I start w/ my TX accent.....wish me luck :)

Because we have a horrible president who has destroyed our reputation, ruined our financial solidity, and acts like he is God's gift to the world.

Yanks, or Yankees, is just a nickname. Typically, Yankees are Americans from the Northern states.

I don't think "yanks" is meant as an offensive term. It's just a catch-all they use to refer to us, like we'd call them "Brits" or whatever. I don't think they all hate us, I have worked for/with quite a few of them who came here (Texas for me) and said they would never dream of going back. The ones I have known are quite pleasant and friendly. Just as there are jerks here, there are some there, too. That's just how it goes.

If you encounter one who is uptight about America, our president, politics or whatever, remind them that England was a worldwide empire not too long ago... and that America only exists because of British tyranny! That should shut 'em up.

Seriously though, they are generally nice people IMHO.

I had a British penpal for a few years. He said they think Americans are all fat and gas guzzlers. Mostly I think they are jealous. His biggest problem was guns, didnt think we should own them. But when a man over there with a gun went crazy shooting everyone, no one could stop him cause the police didnt even carry guns. GO FIGURE needless to say, my penpal is no longer my penpal. I got tired of him ragging on us so bad. They are so used to being told what to do and being controlled that they cant think for themselves evidently. I'm sure not all are like that, however, all i've met were.
