This is a complete misguided view of the English, it was brought about years and years ago when we were so rich we could afford to eat as much sugar as we felt like (when it was a high class thing to eat) and didn't know the affects it had on our teeth.
We have dentists, plenty am going next week. Though will admit I haven't been for 14 years =S.
I have perfectly white, straight teeth and have never had any problems (the reason I'm going is purely to have a wisdom tooth taken out).
On the NHS dentists are around £16.40 for an appointment including medical advice, plans, x rays, etc and then £46 odd for extraction, fillings, etc.
We don't ahavebad teeth, but then again we don't feel the need to polish and buff ours until they look like pieces of pporcelainin our mouths. |

That is very much a generalisation...not all people in England or the rest of the UK have horrible teeth. Yes, it's true that it is expensive here to visit the dentist, but it is so in most other countries as well. Not everyone in the US has perfect teeth, in fact some have really disgusting teeth...like so many other people do in other countries.
People from the UK could ask why is every American obese...when clearly they are not. |

it's a very out dated stereotype. a lot of the Older generations do and did have bad teeth, but the younger generations do not.
my teeth are white, straight and i've never had a problem with them ... and guess what?? i'm English :-) |

We don't. I could ask why all Americans are obese, and it would be equally valid. Most of the answers here show a profound misunderstanding of the NHS. We don't pay and we get decent service. Enjoying your premiums on the old insurance? |

English people are extremely clean. All english citizens have to be checked into a dentist. then they are called up for monthly appointments. If they see your childs teeth are a bit wonkey, they put a brace on at a very early age. They also do teeth bleaching. Don;t just steriotype please! |

The worst teeth I ever saw was on a poor young American girl. She was in her early 20's and they were all brown and rotted almost to the gumline.
I don't actually know anyone in modern England with what you would call bad teeth. Not one. They don't go for big veneers here,though, so the teeth might seem a bit more uneven--which is a natural thing. I think overdone veneers can make a person's teeth look too big and horsey for their mouth actually.

Generally speaking, they don't have bad teeth. That is an old stereotype. |

It is difficult to find a good dentist here and and although it is supposed to be free to go to an NHS dentist, you simply cannot find one. Most people cannot afford to pay for a dentist.
Personally, I still have a fantastic dentist in Germany and make an appointment to see him every time I visit my family. Also dentists in Germany are better qualified and a lot cheaper.
Most dentists there for example do routinely dental implants, bridges et cetera where as in the UK you really have difficulties finding highly specialized dentists. |

Nationalized (socialist) medicine only takes care of the basics. Teeth are not high prioritiy in a government run medical system.
Dental work is available in England, but most either cannot afford it or don't have the money after all of their other expenses.

Most companies don't have dental plans/benefits and it's really expensive in England. Unfortunately people here can't afford the dentist bills and don't go for checkups or get their teeth clean / worked on. Pity really. |
